Hello Everyone, I just joined as an intermediate user, as per the recommendation of the fine people at Tweaking.com.

My problem, as briefly as possible, is as follows. My old HDD with Windows 10 Pro 64 v1511 was beginning to fail and I caught it in time to clone it to a new HDD, which is what I'm running now. There were 10 bad sectors of which 4 were unrepairable and in those sectors 7 system files got corrupted. Fortunately, most of my necessary programs run fine, although my system crashes to the Blue Screen almost every day but it always reboots and recovers back to the desktop fine. Windows Update never completes although the files are downloaded. Windows Defender does update ok. I don't run any 3rd party antivirus in the background. I firt need to update to the Cumulative Update, then to v1607. A clean install in not a viable option for me.

Repair attempts, even with Win Defender off, have included the download of Windows 10 Repair/Install with In-Place Upgrade, burned to disk as of Sept. 2017. Repairing or updating with it or via virtual drive have all failed - update won't pass 33%. Also variations of SFC /scannow locally and offboot have failed. TrustedInstaller confirms "...success" and "...Windows Modules Installer... started successfully". Tweaking's Windows Repair apps failed, as well as SFCFix.

I'm just an intermediate user but it seems to me the solution is to replace the 7 corrupted files with healthy ones. The SFC /scannow CBS log file lists corrupt files which I'm assuming they are the ones to replace. Here they are:
(p) CSI Manifest Corrupt amd64_microsoft-windows-winlogon_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.10586.63_none_f3dc0aaa859f8abd

Is this correct? I saw a Microsoft post a while back which I can't find now, which suggested that, healthy files can be copied from one PC and transferred to the problem PC. This app seems to do that too: Replacer: Free Portable Utility to Replace System Files in Windows - AskVG

I don't want to try this without checking with you experts first. Please advise.

Thank you!

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. So I have all the info I need please start with thee following.

SFC Scan
1. Right-click on the Start
w8start.png
button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
sfc /scannow

3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter.
copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"

4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Right-click on this file and choose Send To...Compressed (zipped folder). Please upload this zipped file CBS.zip to this thread

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Hello BrianDrab. Thanks for your reply. I didn't get the email notice of your reply so I checked in. Good to hear from you. Attached is the log you requested. Scan completed a few minutes ago. I don't know if it will tell you any more than I already posted. Please advise.

Can you confirm if you already tried the following?

1. Download the Media Creation Tool to your desktop. Go ahead and run this. Note: Click the Download tool now button when you are at this link.
2. Accept the license agreement
3. Keep the default which is to Upgrade your PC and click Next.
4. Go ahead and run this through and let me know when complete.

Doing it this way will keep all your data and programs intact. As always though, make sure you have a backup of any critical data in case something unexpected happens.

I'm still not getting any email notices of your replies and my spam folder is clear. Is this normal here?

If the Media Creation Tool is used to create the Windows 10 Repair Install with an In-Place Upgrade disk, yes I've done that and have the disk.

Nope, not normal. I suggest that you unsubscribe from the thread and then resubscribe to the thread to see if that fixes it. If not, I'll have an Admin trace the email. You can do this at the top of the thread under Thread Tools.

Would you mind trying out the steps I have listed previously so there is no use of a disk? Thanks.

Ok. I unsubscribed from this thread. I'm not sure how to re-subscribe unless adding this reply now is what that means.

Having gone to the link you provided and with your "...so there is no use of a disk " I understand what you mean and yes I did do that, downloaded the file and tried to run the repair virtually by mounting the iso image and running image health command. Ultimately after several tries I'd always get "Deployment Management Tool 100%" then "Error: 0x800f081f The source files could not be found. Use the Source option to specify the location ..." even though the Source file/folder is there.

Please advise

Replying should re-subscribe you.

Actually what I am suggesting is different. There is no mounting of an ISO file or anything. Please try following the instructions below and see where you get.

I didn't receive any email notification of your reply this time either.

I did as you said late yesterday and before the download was complete my system crashed, then rebooted back to the desktop ok. I just tried again this morning and it seemed to get through all the steps to the "Ready to Install Windows Pro and Keep Personal Files and Apps" stage, then when the install got to 41% a pop-up with "Modern Setup Host has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. ..." showed. Please advise.

I'll see if an Admin can trace the emails.

...Modern Setup Host has stopped working...
Bummer. This particular error I've never been able to work around. A couple of my peers have though so I can try some of the things they did. First let's gather some more info.

Please do the following.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCScript.txt, and save this to your Desktop.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCScript.txt.
  5. Drag the file SFCScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please
  9. In addition there will be a file named EvtLogs.zip on your desktop. Please attach this, or if too large (i.e. ~7MB), upload to SendSpace and provide the link.

I followed your instructions. After both successful downloads to my desktop, moving the .txt onto the .exe doesn't work. I tried cut/paste but paste was not an option in the pull-down menu. I then tried opening my desktop folder and moved the .txt file over the .exe and that launched the CMD window with "SFC Has Crashed Something has gone horribly wrong ... Yes or No to submit a crash report to developers..." I selected N>Enter and then the attached SFCFix.txt was created. I edited my name out with "myname". EvtLogs.zip was not created and searching for it in Win Explorer only foundmthe .txt file previously downloaded, which has that written in it.

Please advise.

OK, let's do this differently. Please zip up and attach the following two files. If they are too big to attach ~7MB then upload to SendSpace and provide a link.

C:\Windows\System32\winevt\Logs\Application.evtx
C:\Windows\System32\winevt\Logs\System.evtx

I've tried to get them into the desktop first, by copy, cut and zip. None are working due to permissions issue? When I Send to ... Zip I get a pop-up "Compressed (zipped) Folders Error. File not found or no read permission." File Properties show the Read only as unchecked and Security tab> Advanced shows "Allowed" and "Full Control for EventLog, System and Administrators.

Please advise.

BTW: Still not getting any email notifications.

Nope, neither one pastes into that folder either.

I think so but I'm not sure, although when I get the option to run programs as administrator it runs them without asking anything more. How do I check on that?

Right-click your Start button and choose Command Prompt (Admin). Does it show Administrator in the title bar of the command prompt window?

OK, good. While in the Administrative command-prompt please copy and paste the following line into it and hit enter. Let me know if it says 1 file(s) copied.
copy C:\Windows\System32\winevt\Logs\Application.evtx c:\SFCFix\Application.evtx
