I am running a Windows 10 ver 1607 bld 14393.321 (upgraded from Win 7) back when the free upgrade was going on. I had no problems at that time with the upgrade but I just noticed I have not received many updates since 12/18/2016. I successfully received 2 updates on 1/10/2017 regarding Adobe Flash and Win Malicious Software Removal Tool, and KB3211320 on 1/26/17.
Today, I attempted to run Windows Update and when it reached 10% if stopped and gave me "Error code: (0x80073712)". I tried manually installing the oldest update that failed back in 2016 and Windows would not let it install. I followed Microsoft's steps for Resetting the Windows Update Components but many of the .dlls appeared to be missing. I also tried using the Media Creation Tool to update Windows while keeping my files but was told I could not keep my files because the tool could not verify the location of the O/S or something like that and would need to do a complete reinstall.

This is the point where I saw someone who seemed to be able to fix the problem verses a reinstall while searching on Google.

I appreciate any help,
Robert

I forgot to add that I also ran SFC /SCANNOW and no issues were found with any of the system files.

Hi there Izzy!

Let's try running DISM.

DISM /RestoreHealth Scan

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Right-click on the Start
    w8start.png
button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
  2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt

  3. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please zip and attach this to your next post.

If the zip file is larger than 8MB, please use a file sharing service such as OneDrive, DropBox, SendSpace, etc. and include the link with your reply.

Re: 0x80073712 on Windows 10

I don't see the results of the DISM run in the log.

Please try running it again, then wait for a minute before copying the log file.

Re: 0x80073712 on Windows 10

Ok, I ran DISM again and waited over 30 minutes before running the copy LOG command in the cmd window.

This zip file is much larger in size as well.

Re: 0x80073712 on Windows 10

I just went into Windows Update to look for a failed update and it said I was up to date so I tried to update it again and I got this.

It appears Windows updated everything yesterday.

Did your DISM command straighten something out or just look for issues?

Re: 0x80073712 on Windows 10

DISM does make repairs, so the first run may have fixed something.

Are there any other problems that it is presenting at the moment?

Re: 0x80073712 on Windows 10

Not that I can think of at this time. Thank you for the assistance. I've read a little about DISM but never used it myself so your help with that is much appreciated. If I come across any other issues, I'll be back to the forums again.
Thank you very much.
Bob
