Hi,

I'm new here and found you by searching for similar issues on Google. Bear with me, I'm no expert but it looks to me like you have solved many problems similar to mine and I'll try to give you what you need to help.

I have a Windows 7 Pro 64-bit system with a 120 gig SSI (?) drive that recently ran out of room. Around the same time I started getting errors trying to run a few Windows Updates. This lead me to run treesize free program and discover that my winsxs file is over 20 gigs in size, do google search and found this forum. Since then I have cleared some other files to allow for 8 gigs free space.

I am still getting error "Code 80070490 Windows Encountered an Unknown Error" running the following updates:

KB3078601
KB3109094
KB3172605

I followed the advice here for Win 7 system to no avail.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/958044

I have tried to attach the CBS zipped log file but I'm not sure it attached. Please let me know if not.

Here is the SFCFix log file:

SFCFix version 3.0.0.0 by niemiro.

I was unable to attach the CBS zipped log file so I followed your large file upload instructions and I think that did work so you should find the file there now.

- The build-in "Disk Clean Up" tool is able to reduce the size of the "C:\Windows\winsxs" folder(s). It has a special option called "Clean system files". This assumes you have installed optional update KB 2852386
Optional Update KB 2852386

Hi Willy2:

Thanks for your reply. I forgot to write that I did try this several times. I do have the optional update installed (and tried again to reinstall it and it said it was already installed.) The "Clean System Files" option does not produce the Windows Update option that is said to clean up the winsxs file.

Terri

From an elevated command prompt run/launch:

Code:
cleanmgr /sageset:1

Select the options you prefer (probably there will be also that option), then launch the following command (always elevated):

Code:
cleanmgr /sagerun:1

Hello xilolee:

Thank you for your reply.

I did followed your instructions and the box for the Windows Update clean up did show up. I selected it and ran Disk Cleanup but it did not reduce the size of my winsxs file. (>20GB)

Any further suggestions?

Terri

Yes: reboot, re-try the same commands (this time select all the options) and re-reboot.
Then re-try the sfcfix tool and re-upload your cbs folder.
If the file is too big even when compressed/zipped, you can use well known fast upload/download services like MS OneDrive (SkyDrive), Google Drive, DropBox, Box, Mega, Apple iCloud, Amazon Cloud Drive, and so forth...

Thank you. I followed your instructions. The sfcfix text follows and I will upload the CBS folder separately using the instructions for large file upload here:

Packs.zip

Hi Aura:

OK, I downloaded the packs file, unzipped. No files in Manifests folder. Files in Packages folder but when I went to copy them there is no CheckSur folder inside C:\Windows\Temp folder so I stopped and wrote this reply.

What next?

Thanks,

Terri

Simply follow the instructions as they are listed. If there are no files inside the Manifests folder, there is no need to follow that specific instruction for it :)

Hi Aura:

Yes, I understand if there are no files in the unzipped folders, don't copy them. I have files in the unzipped folder, that is not my question. My question is that the folder to copy the files TO does not exist. (....files of the Packages folder (if there are any) inside C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\servicing\Packages) Ie there is no CheckSur folder inside C:\Windows\Temp. Should I create it?

Hope this question is clear,

Thanks,

Terri

Yes, you need to create the folders if they are missing.

Good :) Now let's see if SFC have anything to report.

    Spcusrh.png
    Run as Administrator
  • On Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • On Windows 8.1 and Windows 10, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • Enter the command below and press on Enter;
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
    Note: There's a space between "sfc" and "/scannow";
  • Once the scan is complete, enter the command below and press on Enter
    Code:
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  • A file called cbs.txt will have appeared on your Desktop. Upload the file on Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive and post the download URL for it here;
Note: Please note that the CBS.log is volatile, which means that if you don't upload it after the SFC scan is completed, it won't have the information from the scan anymore. So archive it and upload it as soon as you can.
