Hello,

nothing easier than adding a network location in Network and Sharing Center, right ? I cannot find the choice My Network Places under the See also section, at the left of the windows. I cannot neither find the choice Add Network Location by clicking right on Computer in the Start menu.

The most likely is that I deactivated some network features in Windows a few months ago, which are mandatory for the feature to show up. I cannot remember which ones. Someone may recall me how to fix it here ?

Type this in the search/run box
Code:
rundll32.exe shwebsvc.dll,AddNetPlaceRunDll

If nothing shows up then you have it turned off. I have it turned off so my typing showed nothing.

Hi Plodr !

The command actually launches the wizard in a new window. The problem is that the wizard does not give me a choice to setup any new regular Ethernet connection. I have only a choice to create a new PPoE or an ISDN connection.

The choice to define a new local wired network is lacking. Have you any idea why ?

setup any new regular Ethernet connection
I'm not clear on what you want to do.
I plug an ethernet/CAT cable between a computer and my router and I have a connection. We have 8 computers currently in the house as well as a chromecast stick, an Android tablet and a printer attached to the router through a print server. I've not had a problem getting one of the computers, or tablet on the internet, either wired or wireless. The router assigns the local IP address.

Well my description was not clear enough.

The machine has one network card. It is normally running at home, on a LAN without DHCP. It is then configured manually, with a fixed IP address (for the machine, the gateway, the DNSes). I took the machine with me at the office for a few days, where there is a DHCP server running. In order not to change and loose the existing network setup (not a big deal, but it has an unusual netmask and IP numbering), I wanted to create an new "network" in Network and Sharing Center, which to apply DHCP to. This is what I am unable to do. The option to create a new "place" does not exist anymore on that machine. Do you see what I mean ? I suspect that I switched off in the past some Windows features related to the network, but do not remember which one.

I hope that description of the context is better ? Thanks for any help.

Taking a personal computer to the office and wanting to add it to the office network wired might be the problem. Some offices have strict controls on what equipment can be added to the network.

For instance, on my home network I have both MAC filtering on and a limited number of IP addresses. Any new device coming into my home can't get on my network until I make changes in my router settings. Since you probably can't get into the router settings to see if devices are limited, that could be why you are unable to add your computer to the network.

This is outside of my very limited experience on adding a wired computer to an outside network. Sorry. Perhaps someone more equipped might be able to tell you what you need to check.
