Attemping to upgrade a Windows 7 SP1 x64 laptop to Windows 10 via the MCT, getting error 0x8009000F - 0x90002.

I thought maybe it had to do with WU not being current (the laptop hadn't been updated in over a year) but even after installing 70+ updates, KB2901983 continues to fail (.NET 4.5.2) with the error below.

I'm wondering if this WU error is preventing Win 10's MCT from succeeding? Did some digging and found references to KB2901983 failing because of some other patches, which I removed but the problem continues.
See: .NET Framework 4.5.2 fails to install with error 643. http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...rror-643/e5e9ae87-1061-42b0-882a-de92b1470384
"After researching further, found this particular issue to be linked to 3 Windows updates (KB3008627, KB3000988 & KB2918614). After uninstalling these updates, we temporary hid the updates to prevent the reinstallation of them, then installed .NET 4.5.2 using Windows Updates and rebooted. Once installed, we un-hid the uninstalled updates and reinstalled them. "

I even tried manually downloading and installing KB2901983 via

Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.2 (Offline Installer) for Windows Vista SP2, Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2008 SP2, Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2

...but it continues to fail.

The machine is a family member's, I don't know for sure if they have it but will have them look. If they don't have it will I be out of luck?

Not necessarily but it would likely make things much easier. Check and let me know.

If they don't have the DVD, then please let me know the make/model of the computer as well as if Windows 7 came pre-installed on the machine or if it was a purchased retail copy or an upgrade, etc.

Thanks.

Hi, I can't find an installation DVD but my in-laws did make a 4-CD recovery set, which does appear to be for Win 7 x64. There's also a recovery partition on the laptop - I'm sure the laptop did come with Win 7 pre-installed as there's a product key sticker on the laptop that references "Windows 7 Home Prem OA."

The make is HP and the model is G72-B57CL.

OK, let's take a deeper look.

Using the .NET Collect Utility

  1. Download collect.exe and save to your desktop.
  2. Go ahead and run the tool
  3. The utility creates a compressed cabinet of all the needed logs to %TEMP%\vslogs.cab.
  4. Please zip/attach to this post or if too large, send using a service such as SendSpace.

Thank you. Please do the following.

Extract Readable WindowsUpdate.log
1. Click in the search box at the bottom of the screen and type Powershell.
2. Click on Windows PowerShell Desktop app that appears in the search results.
3. Copy/Paste the following into the Powershell window and hit enter. Note: In Windows 10, after you have copied your text, you can simply right-click inside the powershell window and the text will be pasted.
Get-WindowsUpdateLog

4. You may be prompted with a Microsoft Internet Symbol Store terms of use dialog. If you are, please click Yes.
5. When the process is done there should be a WindowsUpdate.log on your desktop. Please zip/attach this file.

I see multiple results for "powershell" :

powersh.jpg

If I choose Windows PowerShell and type Get-WindowsUpdateLog I see:

Windows PowerShell

PS C:\Users\Chuck> Get-WindowsUpdateLog
The term 'Get-WindowsUpdateLog' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet, function, script file, or operable program.
Check the spelling of the name, or if a path was included, verify that the path is correct and try again.

Understood. You didn't do anything incorrectly. Can you go to add/remove programs and remove any .NET Frameworks that you see?

To have the best chance of success on an upgrade you should try the following.

1. Use the MCT to create the install media on a USB drive.
2. Ensure that anything non-essential to turning on your machine and operating it is unplugged. So any wireless devices, printers, scanners, etc. Unplug them all before the upgrade.
3. Perform a Clean Boot of your machine following the instructions at the following link.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929135

4. Then use the USB drive to begin the install.

If you are able to do this, please let me know if the results are different this time.

Ugh, took care of all the steps, still getting the error from my original post, 0x8009000F - 0x90002. I tried the MCT both ways, to install on USB and even to then try upgrading the PC and the error was the same.

Thanks, here's what it found:

Thanks. Please do the following.

Step#1 - FRST Scan

1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Right click to run as administrator. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
3. Please ensure you place a check mark in the Addition.txt check box at the bottom of the form before running (if not already).
4. Press Scan button.
5. It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should now be the desktop)
6. Please copy and paste log back here.
7. Another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST64.exe) will be generated Please also paste that along with the FRST.txt into your reply.
