Your forum is by far the most thorough and best explained out there. The 'help' on Microsoft.com is weak- usually just, "use the update readiness tool".
SP1 has been failing for a while, but now probs installing webcam etc. lead me to try again.
Note that for failed SP1 update, Windows Repair disk did NOT work- said it needed SP1 first!

To make a long story short-SFCFix finds 16 files it can't fix. Skip to past *
******************************************************************************************
Things tried w admin login & didn't work:
sfc /scannow (fixed some files)
SFCFix
MicrosoftFixit.wu.LB.149324821564250292.32.1.Run.exe
MicrosoftFixit50123.msi
WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab
Avast antivirus
MalwareBytes

all above many times
AdwCleaner.exe

DL SP1, burn to DVD->run
clean boot/minimal boot, no antivirus

WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab /WUForce
from admin CMD.exe window

Windows 7 Repair disk (fails, saying it needs SP1 installed first!! despite advice at
https://www.sysnative.com/forums/windows-update/14596-cant-update-all-have-code-80073712-a.htmlwhich recommends using repair disk BEFORE SP1 update)

The next best advice suggested messing w the Registry, which I'd rather not...
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...80073712/f2443a5c-3468-487c-a5dc-b9328bd133e1

"(found bad files in CheckSUR.log,) went through the registry and deleted any matches..." worked for him, but since I would be following a script in the dark, decided to try here first before that or clean reinstall.

I think I've given it a fair shot- how do I remove or fix those (two??) files?
BTW- I drpped a letter in my username, should be VWFeature- FWIW*

Hello and welcome to the forum :)

I will start of with this:
BTW- I drpped a letter in my username, should be VWFeature- FWIW*

I have amended your username by adding the missing R :)

This will help find out where these files come from and will help to fix them up.

SFCFix script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Go to your desktop and right click on the background -> Select New -> Text Document -> Name this file SFCFixScript.txt.
  3. Open up SFCFixScript.txt and copy all of the following text inside the code box below and paste it into SFCFixScript.txt.
    Code:
    Trace::
    msil_system.resources_b77a5c561934e089_6.1.7600.16743_en-us_677f95a096e8f9b8
    msil_system.resources_b77a5c561934e089_6.1.7600.20884_en-us_50b5d940b08cd8bb
  4. Click on File -> Save. Close out of SFCFixScript.txt.
  5. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  6. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFixScript.txt.
  7. Drag the file SFCFixScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  8. SFCFix will now process the script.
  9. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  10. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.
