[SOLVED] Win 2019 - sfc /scannow error at 73%

We previously had an error that would not allow adding roles or features. We were able to fix that at the time by using "Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth" and pointing to another 2019 server.
Both "Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth", and also Chkdsk, work without errors now.

However the one thing not fixed is that sfc /scannow now always stops at 73% with error "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation." The only lines in the CBS log referring to errors refer to Windows Defender. Is this important to fix, or is ignoring this error OK?

Thanks for your help.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative,

Upload your COMPONENTS hive.
  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
  • Please copy this file to your desktop.
  • Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
  • Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To > Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
  • If the file is too large to upload here, upload the file to www.wetransfer.com and post the link in your next reply.

Hi,

Step 1. Download
56f31e53c97da-SFCFix.PNG
SFCFix and save it to your desktop.

Warning: This fix was written specifically for this system. Do not run this fix on another system.
  • Save any work you have open, and close all programs.
  • Download the attachment SFCFix.zip and save it to your desktop.
  • Drag the SFCFix.zip file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it.

  • SFCFix will launch, let it complete.
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt.
  • Post the logfile (SFCFix.txt) as attachment in your next reply.

Step 2. Run the System File Checker and post the result. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS log.
Code:
SFC /Scannow

It worked! sfc /scannow completed successfully. The results displayed: Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. For online repairs, details are included in the CBS log file located at windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For offline repairs, details are included in the log file provided by the /OFFLOGFILE flag.

I also ran DISM /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth again to be sure, which also completed OK.

(There were a few errors displayed while the file SFCFix.txt was being saved.)

Thank you very much. I will be sure to send a donation!

Hi,

You're welcome. Glad to hear SFC completed succesfully and thanks for your donation to Sysnative.
(There were a few errors displayed while the file SFCFix.txt was being saved.)
The fix completed succesfully, and this error can be ignored: "Failed to generate a complete zip file. Upload aborted."

Hi, The original problem from before contacting you of not being able to add or remove role or features remains. However it may not be exactly the same as before. Should I open another thread? Any attempt to add or remove a role or feature (any role or feature) starts OK, but then fails with this message: "The request to add or remove features on the specified server failed... The referenced assembly could not be found. Error: 0x80073701." All system checks I have tried proceed OK without error, however: "sfc /scannow" "chkdsk" "dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth", etc.

Hi,

Please attach the latest CBS logs for me, it is not necessary to open a new thread since it is the same server.

This is fairly large because I had run various system checks and tried installing various roles and features. The end of the file is a failed attempt to add a DNS server.

Please perform the following steps:

wusa /uninstall /KB:5007206
  • Let me know if it says it was successful or if there are any errors.
  • When you get the message: The update KB5007206 is not installed on this computer, then perform step 2.

Code:

  • When the scan is complete, a message will display that SearchReg.txt is saved in the same folder FRST was started from.
  • Post the logfile SearchReg.txt as attachment in your next reply.

wusa /uninstall /KB:5007206 produced the message that "The update KB5007206 is not installed on this computer".

Here is the result from running the FarBar tool:

Hi,

Start the

Farbar Recovery Scan Tool again.

Warning: This script was written specifically for this system. Do not run this script on another system.
  • Download the attachment fixlist.txt and save it to your desktop.
  • Right-click on FRST.exe and select "Run as administrator".
  • Press the Fix button.
  • If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally.
  • When finished, a log called Fixlog.txt will appear in the same directory the tool is run from.
  • Post the logfile Fixlog.txt as attachment in your next reply.

Afterwards reboot the server and try to install a role or feature and let me know the result. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS logs.
