One of the moderators in the Windows forum suggested I come here for some help with this issue.

I removed 13 of my drives from the system so only my win7 sp1 x64 drive was mounted. I booted into that with no problems, then ran the win10 upgrade from my USB drive. It went along for quite a while and then did the rollback with that error message. I followed another thread here with the same problem.

I have attached the checksur log file and the setupact log file... please advise what the next steps should be.

I do have a clean win10 boot drive with the latest stuff, however as a developer I have a ton of programs already installed and it would be a royal pain to put all of that stuff back in again. I should note that I did try to run sfc, but that caused even more problems. The original windows forum post is here: Redirecting

Thanks kindly in advance :)

Gary

Hello and welcome,

Provide the Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again. Note: If you find that you need to reboot and are unable to because this is a server then try Option#2 below.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to Gofile or WeTransfer and just provide the link here.

Option#2 (only if you are unable to follow the previous instructions)

  • Please download the Freeware RegBak from here: Acelogix Software - Download products
You will find it at the bottom of the page that the link brings you to.
  • Go ahead and install this program and accept all the defaults. After the last install screen the program should open.
  • Click the New Backup button. Accept the defaults and simply click Start.
  • When it says Finished successfully, click the Close button.
  • This will bring you back to the main screen of the program. You will see one entry in this list with the date that you did it. Right-click on this line-item and select Explore Backup...
  • This will bring you into the folder where the backup was made. You should see a Users folder and a Windows folder along with a couple other files. Double-click on the Windows folder to open it. Then open the System32 folder and then config folder. You should see around 6 files in here, one of which is named COMPONENTS.
  • Copy the COMPONENTS file to your Desktop. If the COMPONENTS file does not exist, please fetch it instead from C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.
  • Now right-click on the COMPONENTS file that is on your desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Then please upload the zip file (COMPONENTS.zip) to your favourite file sharing website (it will be too big to upload here). Examples of services to upload to are Gofile or WeTransfer and then just provide the link in your reply.
  • You can close any open windows you have as well as the RegBak program now.

That file is way to small and therefor not repairable. The file size should be approx. 30-50MB on a Windows 7 machine.
That also explains the error "Unable to Query Store Version" in the CheckSur log.

Do you have a backup or restore point ?

Well... I think I am screwed. :( :(

I checked system restore and found that at some point, it got turned off for my boot drive. How that happened, I have no clue. I know the importance of that and I have never ever turned it off. Other drives, yes... but never my boot drive. So I turned it back on, rebooted... and checked. The last spot it could find was back in June of 2021!!!!!!

Clearly it would be unwise to choose that.

Seems my only option at this point is to proceed with my fresh win 10 installed a few weeks back on a new SSD drive... so many programs I need to re-install for that system... sometimes being a Dev really sucks.

*sigh

Well, don't give up that quick. We can give it a try if you like, not much to loose. Microsoft stopped supporting Windows 7 in January 2020 so there aren't much updates installed which is good regarding to the components hive.
Create a backup of your current system to start with, just to be sure.

I actually did a windows backup prior to trying this update, but considering the drive restore for the boot system was turned back on, I just did another full system backup... ready for your next step :)

system restore explorer only came up with the windows backup created on 9/12/2024... the components file is the same file I previously uploaded.

That is not good. Where did you see the restore point made June of 2021 ?

when I turned the data back on for the boot drive, set the space to 100 gb and rebooted.. ran system restore and it came up with that. When I check it today, it only showed the one from the past few days. :(

Restore the system to the windows backup created on 9/12/2024.
Does that help ?

I can select the full windows backup in restore, but when I click on that I get nothing showing at all. It looks like I am getting nowhere with this. I had thought that perhaps windows now had that drive turned back on then maybe... so I tried doing the upgrade again. Update download lots of files, got to doing the install, windows loading bar came up, system proceeded to 14% complete, then rolled back again to 7. Same error message.

Looks like this just isn't going to work out for me. Since MS has decided that they are removing Outlook support on 7 tomorrow, I have started the process of using my fresh install on a new SSD drive to put programs and data back in. Gonna be a long process. *sigh* I started out with putting the free Outlook in first, ran the installer, said I had to goto MS Store to download the program so I did that. Then it said I already owned it but it came up with Office and nothing showing. Ended up having to go to the store again, manually selecting the free Outlook, and downloaded and installed that, which finally worked.

One of the strange things though, I had the installer already in my win7 downloads and when I booted into 10 and then went to grab it from that drive, it said I didnt have permissions (obviously) but to click 'here' to get access. I did that, the progress bar went to 100% complete but no files appeared. So I booted into 7, selected the file, went to copy it to 10 downloads folder. Said I didnt have permissions but clicked continue... and 7 gave me access to 10, where as 10 gave me no access to 7.

Gotta love it... not. With that said, I want to thank you deeply for the attempts you made. I appreciate the efforts...

Gary :)

Ok. Sorry we couldn't help.

Take care.
