[SOLVED] Win 10: Cannot start BITS service

Hello,

when trying to start the BITS service, it fails with error 0x8E5E0226. What does that error mean and how to track the cause of the problem down?

Please do the following:

SFC Scan


  1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

    Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Farbar Service Scanner
1. Download Farbar Service Scanner from here, and move it to the Desktop
2. Right-click on FSS.exe > Run as Administrator
3. Checkmark everything, and click Scan

4. Once it finishes, Notepad will open FSS.txt on your Desktop. Copy and paste everything in it in your next reply

Interesting. I did that, but as soon as I start the service, the mentioned error shows up and the status reverts back to "Demand".

Step#1 - DISM /RestoreHealth Scan
Warning:this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.


  1. Right-click on the Start button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
  2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter. If prompted to overwrite the existing file go ahead.
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Please zip/upload to this thread.
    Please Note:: if the file is too big (over 7MB) to upload to your next post, please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.
 
1. Click on Start and type in \Programdata\Microsoft\network\downloader.
2. Press Enter.
3. Find and delete the following two files: qmgr0.dat and qmgr1.dat.
4. Check for updates,
 
There are still a few things we can try, but I have the feeling it's a software issue with Quark since updates do work.

Are the following services set to Automatic?

Terminal Services
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
System Event Notification
Windows Management Instrumentation Driver Extensions
COM+ Event System
DCOM Server Process Launcher
 
I don't find "Terminal Services". Can you find out its German name? And, shouldn't it be possible to start BITS without error and keep it running?
