Julian Assange is pulling out all the stops to prevent his pending extradition to Sweden where the WikiLeaks founder faces charges of sexual assault.

Assange - who denies the accusations - is concerned that extradition to Sweden could ultimately lead to his eventual transfer to the United States.

As such, the WikiLeaks founder has asked Britain’s Supreme Court to re-open his appeal.

"Lawyers for Julian Assange have lodged papers to apply to re-open the appeal, as expected, for the reasons set out in the hearing," a court spokesperson told AFP.

Australia sanguine on Assange-to-Ecuador, would fight US extradition

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard says Julian Assange’s decision to seek political asylum in Ecuador is a matter for Assange and not something Australia needs to comment on.

“Mr Assange’s choices are a matter for Mr Assange,” Gillard told a press conference at the G20 meeting in Mexico. “His decisions are for him to make.”

Gillard also said that any extradition to the USA, where Assange could face the death penalty, are hypothetical. “The matters Mr Assange faces are of a sexual complaints nature involving the laws of Sweden,” she pointed out, and refused to speculate on whether extradition to the USA could take place from Sweden.

WikiLeaks founder "off limits" to British authorities

The British Foreign Office confirms Julian Assange is "beyond the reach of police" so long as the WikiLeaks founder remains in the Ecuadorian embassy where he is seeking asylum.

However, due to apparent violations of his bail conditions, Assange will be subject to immediate arrest if he attempts to exit the premises.

"He has breached one of his bail conditions which was to be at his bail address between 10pm and 8am every day... He is subject to arrest under the Bail Act," a spokesman for London's Metropolitan Police told Reuters.

WikiLeaks undeterred by whistleblower crackdown
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange may be seeking political asylum in the UK's Ecuadorian embassy, but the whistle-blowing organization has little intention of halting its activities any time soon.
"We've been starved of 95 per cent of our funds. Julian Assange is facing legal battles. We know that in July [a US] Secret Grand Jury will be trying to find angles of bringing cases against Julian and possibly other members of our organization," WikiLeaks spokesperson Kristinn Hrafnsson told Russia Today.

[h=1]Ecuador’s Decision on Assange Asylum Expected Today[/h]
As police stand guard outside the Ecuadorian embassy in London, the Latin American government is expected to decide today whether it will grant WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange asylum to prevent him from being extradited to Sweden.

Authorities in the UK said on Wednesday that they had met with the Ecuadorian ambassador to the UK, Anna Alban, and had had an “amicable” conversation with her about the issue.

“She got an understanding of our legal position and we gained an understanding of theirs,” a spokesman told the Guardian. “It is our understanding overnight that they are minded to reach a view in Quito today [on the asylum request], or in the very near future. There is no reason to believe that all this was anything other than a surprise to them, and they are dealing with an unprecedented set of circumstances.”

WikiLeaks founder handed extradition letter

Julian Assange may be holed up at the Ecuadorian embassy in London where he is seeking political asylum, but that hasn't stopped British law enforcement officials from serving him a letter of extradition.

According to reports, the letter, penned by none other than Scotland Yard, demanded the 40-year-old Assange visit a police station "at a time of our choosing."

WikiLeaks founder could face death penalty

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is currently holed up at the Ecuadorian embassy in London.

Assange entered the embassy on June 19 after all attempts to fight extradition to Sweden - where the WikiLeaks founder faces charges of sexual assault - failed.

Assange, who denies the accusations, is concerned that extradition to Sweden could ultimately lead to his eventual transfer and detention in the United States.

Indeed, Assange's US lawyer, Michael Ratner, said he was certain
the WikiLeaks founder had already either been secretly indicted by a grand jury in Washington or would face extradition with a view to prosecution - with the death penalty remaining a distinct possibility.
