[SOLVED] WHEA Uncorrectable Error, pre/post CU 1703. FIX: BIOS UPDATE.

Gooday, I hope that you are able to help. I was recommended to your site by Malwarebytes support team.

The PC was home-built, upgraded and updated over several years, but now running
Windows 10 Creators 1703 and later updates,
64bit,
Originally Windows 7 Pro retail, upgraded to Windows 10 last year on the free offer, and kept to up to date subsequently.
Asus Z87 mobo about two years old, with Intel chip as below,
Win 10 Pro upgrade installed over Win7 Pro under Microsoft free upgrade offer,

Intel i5-4670K chip,
Intel HD Graphics 4600 on-board
Asus Z87-K Mobo
PSU (unable to ascertain without major surgery - requires complete removal of PSU from full tower - no labels obvious inside case)

(Home Built, upgraded and updated in 2016, as above)
Desktop - full tower
 
BSOD WHEA Uncorrectable Error, pre and post Creators 1703 updates

It appears that the 'File' failed to upload with my earlier post, so I have re-run the app and hope that the file is firmly 'attached' now. The other information concerning my PC is as the original post above.

Just to add that both yesterday and today, BSODs happened two or three times DURING the data collection phase of this app, so hopefully the final and successful file will have captured those in some useful way.

There appears to be a cache write errors for Processor 3. Have you overclocked any components within your system?

Have you checked the motherboard support page for any BIOS updates? There appears to be an update released 2015 for improved system stability - Access Denied

Hello, and thank you for this very rapid response, but also the warning about the difficulty of debugging such generic crashes.
To answer your questions in turn;
1. No, no overclocking by me since setting up the system.
2. I have checked again, and all BIOS settings are as 'optimised defaults'.
3. Yes, I had seen that, but until very recently - these BSODs - I had thought the BIOS worked best left alone unless some serious problem had occurred. Are you suggesting that I should go directly to the most recent BIOS update and use the Asus utility to install that one, or must I follow some earlier BIOS updates, please?
Again, thanks for your quick response, and your tolerance of one who is quite new to such BSODs - and to the forum.

I would suggest updating the BIOS to the latest version if you feel comfortable with updating it, otherwise we can try some other troubleshooting steps first, since Stop 0x124's can be caused by drivers (especially chipset drivers) in some rare cases.

Have you attempted to boot into Safe Mode and seeing if the system crashes there? It'll be a quick method to ascertain if the issue is definitely hardware-related.

Why malwarebytes?
Did they help you to remove any malware?
Could you provide the thread link?

I found in your msinfo32 log some files starting with us0 (us0*.dll): I didn't find anything like that on my system, and very poor information on internet.
Did you check those files with malwarebytes team?
Could it be you used some driver updater program (intel and MS excluded)?

Apologies for this delayed response; I was called away unexpectedly, and have only just returned this late evening.


1. Malwarebytes were helping initially as my own Malwarebytes software Premium Edition wasn't stable, the scan by Technical Support indicated that I needed the more recent 'beta' and then shortly afterwards the full new (3.2.) version, so that was their official involvement. So, no malware specifically but, when I indicated the BSODs problems, they were kind enough to assist by running some scans on my PC, and making some suggestions for improvements - but eventually we agreed that as the BSODs were still happening, I'd need specialist advice - and that's when Malwarebytes suggested yourselves, and I came to you. I'm not sure how to 'link' you to our e-mail exchanges, but will ask if Malwarebytes can do something from their end - perhaps explain 'specialist to specialist' what they did and what results were obtained - I hope that may help.
2. us0*.dll - I know in general terms about dll, but have NOT noticed these specifically so cannot account for them, sorry - all I have found is this link - File Extension US0 - What is .us0 file? How to Open US0 File
3. Driver updater programs - well yes, Windows and those Intel drivers linked to the Z87 chipset on my Z87-K Assus mobo, but apart from those, only the updater for my Samsung kit - mainly for the laser printer. Early on, when I thought drivers might be the problem, I ran every driver in Device Viewer through 'update driver' but with virtually no changes made. I did have a strange incident where a small utility/program (Wushowhide?) appeared on my desktop, and listed about ten drivers that 'were awaiting update' with 'show or hide' instructions, but they never showed up in Windows Update, no matter how often I ran that and, as several were 'Intel', the specialist Intel Driver Updater didn't show them either. (I was cautioned against using third-party updater programs and have not done so since that initial 'listing'.)


My apologies for this long response, but am unsure how much may be relevant.


4.The other question about updating the BIOS is a book in itself, with the Asus UEFI BIOS hedged in my THREE methods of updating, all dependant upon Asus software - NONE of which works effectively with my system, nor with Windows 10 at all (at my guess), since none of them have Win 10 drivers offered. I have tried all three methods, including reinstalling Asus 'AI Suite 3' which was associated with so many problems by other people on the forums and which I rarely got to run, even with Win7 when this mobo was new, and had removed. NOW, if I do run it ONLY to be able to use the BIOS 'Updater' facility within it, it crashes to BSOD instantly, returning a 'Driver Verifier Detected Violation' I have emailed Asus for assistance with (Win10) drivers, but had no response as yet.
5. Finally, I have tried some 'Safe Mode' since my return, but only for short time; what should I be looking for there, please?


I'll contact MalwareBytes to see if they are able to give you any useful information from their thread and, once again, many thanks for your assistance for which I am very grateful.

Chipset Driver issue: you mentioned this earlier as a ‘possible’ source of BSODs problem, so here is what I know/have read today.
The driver on my system in Device Driver is now:Intel ® 8 Series/C220 Chipset Family SATA AHCI Controller - 12.0.0.1082 dated 22/01/2013.
The Asus Z87-K drivers website offers me:Intel_Chipset_Win_10_10.1.1.7 for Windows 10 32bit & 64bit (WHQL) – dated 09/05/2014
But the Intel Driver Update Utility tells me that I have installed on my system:Intel 10.0.15063.0, and that there IS an update available Intel 10.1.1.14, BUT ADDS “see detailed description to make sure that you need this file”, yet I cannot find any link to any ‘detailed description’ to make this check, so am rather confused.
Again, I am unsure whether this will help.

Just managed to update BIOS (USB method) to '1402', as you recommended, and all seems well so far, so am leaving PC running to see what happens now.

  1. No problems, I thought there was a link in their support forum (I thought you asked for help in their support forum).
  2. .us0 extension is another thing.
    You have unknown (at least, unknown to me) dll files in your system that start with us0.
    Especially if bsods won't stop after your more recent update, I'd investigate those files (and the OS, in general) with malwarebytes team.
    Or you can open a new thread in this forum, in the security arena sub-forum (click).
    In this latter case, check malware removal posting instructions (click).
    You will be helped by Corrine or BrianDrab, usually, but there are also other specialists.
  3. Good.
    I also prefer to use directly windows device manager or the intel driver updater tool.
    Or manufacturers webpage, when it is strictly necessary.

I was working with Ron via Malwarebytes Help Desk and referred him to your forum for assistance. I've already reviewed his logs for infection and see none. The files you are questioning, appear to be from sourcforge.net

For example, there is this driver in the FRST.txt:

I downloaded it and didn't find us0*.dll files in it.
This is the list of them:
Spoolsv.exe using us009lm.dll, us00alm.dll, us013lm.dll, us009pc.dll, us00apc.dll, us013pc.dll.
WmiPrvSE.exe using us013du.dll.
Could they be part of the printer software?

This looks like a really old version of that software - just judging by the file date of May 17, 2011 .

These bsod's did not occur until after Win 10 Update - machine was just fine long before this. After updating his BIOS, his computer has remained stable so it looks like the great folks here at sysnative have once again saved one of my customers. Thanks! :beerchug2:
