Update: AMD acknowledged on Twitter that there is a low fan speed problem and promised to release a fix on Monday, November 30.

Original story:

Users are reporting that the latest Crimson driver from AMD is locking their fans at 20%, resulting into busted video cards.

Reddit has a lot of reports from users who are saying that after they had installed the latest Crimson driver, the fan remained locked at 20%. This is usually happening without the knowledge of the user, who finds out when the system crashes. If they’re lucky, the system will reboot, but that's not always the case. It’s possible for GPU to die in the process, and that makes things a lot more complicated.

Hardware developers are not strangers to these problems, and they did it before. AMD has just launched its new Crimson driver, and they have made a really big deal out of it, but they might have jumped the gun on this one, especially since the reports from the community are still coming.

There is a temporary fix

As usual, the community has come to the rescue. A user has posted a fix on how to change the settings from the drivers, and it’s not terribly complicated, but the downside is that people need to make these changes after each reboot. A lot of users have confirmed the problem, and it’s likely that AMD will be quick to issue an update, but we have to keep in mind that not everyone updates, and the latest version of the Crimson driver will continue to kill GPUs for a while.
