Hoping on your support

Hi RORUI :)

Retrieving the COMPONENTS Hive
Follow the instructions below to retrieve your COMPONENTS Hive and send me it.
  • Open your Windows Explorer, and navigate to the C:\Windows\System32\Config folder;
  • In this folder, find the COMPONENTS file (there's no extension), and copy it to your Desktop;
    Note: If you receive an error message saying that the COMPONENTS file is in use, restart your computer and try again. If the error message persist, let me know.
  • Right-click on it, and select Send to... and choose Compressed (zipped) folder;
  • Upload the file on Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive and post the download URL for it here;

It's not looking good right now. I cannot load your hive on my Windows 10 desktop, neither can I on my Windows 7 VM. I'll try to load it tomorrow on my Windows 7 work laptop, but if I can't, you'll have to run a repair install of your Windows. What's happening is that your COMPONENTS Hive is corrupted at the point that it cannot be opened anymore, and without it, you won't be able to run Windows Update and you'll encounter a lot of system related issues. Sadly, this hive cannot be "repaired". Sometimes, I manage to mount a corrupted hive which fixes it (no idea what it does), and I then proceed to unload it and instruct the user to swap the old hive for the new one I unloaded and that fixes the issue. In your case, I wasn't able to do that. Do you have your Windows 8 (or Windows 8.1?) installation media?

You cannot run a repair install from a Recovery disc, sadly. Is your version of Windows 8 (and are you using 8 or 8.1?) OEM or retail?

Alright so you have an OEM version of Windows 8. I'll get back at you tomorrow when I'll have tried to load the Hive on my work laptop. I'll also try to find a way for you to get a legitimate Windows 8 64-bit .iso if I cannot load the Hive. If I can't load the Hive and cannot find an .iso, sadly you'll have to do a Factory Reset if you want to solve that issue. But we're not there yet.

@Aura - What about the reset/refresh feature built into Windows 8 - it accomplishes the same as a clean/repair install??

@RORUI - don't do anything yet - wait for Aura.

True. I've barely used that feature so I tend to forget it. It will only work if the Recovery disc actually have a Windows system image, or if he have a partition on his drive that contains the manufacturer's image. So we should check that.

RORUI, does the Recovery disc that you have came with your laptop/computer? Or did you create it using Windows 8?

The disc came with the laptop!

I first tried the refresh option, that failed.
Reser was succesfull. Than i had to run W update. That took a while. The problem is that the last 63 updates will nit install. When I select the first one it starts installing but after the restart the laptop is trying to install the others as well and has to roll back again the 63 updates?

any suggestions?
regards Ron

Let's see if there's not corruption already.

    Code:
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  • A file called cbs.txt will have appeared on your Desktop. Upload the file on Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive and post the download URL for it here;
Note: Please note that the CBS.log is volatile, which means that if you don't upload it after the SFC scan is completed, it won't contains the information from the scan anymore. So archive it and upload it as soon as you can.
