Hi there,

I had been debating if I should post asking for help since yesterday afternoon when WU's decided not to work properly.

Here's my story...

I have in my possession an Acer W8.1 64-bit laptop that has been tucked away in my son in laws closet since June of 2016. He brought it to me asking if I could clean up the adware and bring it up to date. One verified theysystem is clean, there were 20 updates waiting to be installed. Of the 20, 3 were successful and required a reboot. After rebooting the the rest refused to install. Ran sfc'er which found corrupt files that could not be fixed, so I ran it again. Same thing... Downloaded SFCfix whch fixed something and was able to install a few more of the updates. See SFCFix below:

View attachment SFCFix1.txt

I am still having issues with WU's continually "checking for updates". Same with Windows Defender which will not update.

Ran SFCFix again nothing found/fixed...

CBSlog attached below:

Sorry. Seems I can get the CBSlog to upload but it just disappears, so I am unable to attach. :( I will try gain here in a moment..

Thank you

Hi Brian,

Yes I do. Your help in sorting this out is greatly appreciated! I set the laptop aside since my last post. Let me know what you like for me to do and it will be done.

Donna

I'm unable to download your CBS.log from your dropbox as I believe you didn't make the link public. However let's start with the following.

SFC Scan
1. Right-click on the Start
w8start.png
button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
sfc /scannow

3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter.
copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"

4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Right-click on this file and choose Send To...Compressed (zipped folder). Please upload this zipped file CBS.zip to this thread

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

No worries. Please do the following.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

Hey Brian? I have never experienced this type of scan personally. Is it the type of scan that can "appear" to stall on 20.0% for a period of time?

If you are still having issues with Windows Updates checking for updates and never finishing have you seen the following? Search for Windows Updates takes forever? - A possible solution

Based on that article I would download the following two updates to your desktop.
Download Update for Windows 8.1 for x64-based Systems (KB3173424) from Official Microsoft Download Center
Download Update for Windows 8.1 for x64-based Systems (KB3172614) from Official Microsoft Download Center

Then reboot and immediately install the 1st update.
Then reboot and immediately install the 2nd update.

That should get you going.

Thank you for the last post. I had bookmarked that link you posted above while researching the issue prior to starting this thread and prior to running sfc. I figured it would be silly to even try the downloads till the files were replaced.

I did try updating Windows Defender after you posted the logs were clean but I got the message that the updates failed (not exact words). Windows Updates is still stuck on checking for updates. I was having issues with my satellite connection dropping for some odd reason today. Thought about letting the laptop sit over night, powered on, to see what happens but I think I will download the KB's above instead.

Thank you Brian for your help and guidance. I'll keep you informed. :)

Hey Brian,

This doesn't seem right.. I downloaded KB3173424 to the desktop of the W8.1 and clicked Open from within the right click menu just after I submitted that last post above. The Windows Update Standalone Installer has been Searching for updates on this computer.. ever since. That was 2 1/2 hrs ago. Doesn't seem normal to me. Will let it go over night since it is so late.

Did you first reboot your machine and then immediately (as soon as your able to when the desktop appears) attempt to install the update?

Yes. Several times. It was still searching this a.m. and I am unable to cancel it. I went ahead and rebooted again to stop the scan, ran FSS which showed no discrepancies and even went into services manually to check for any stopped services. All appear to be fine. Thought I would try KB3173424 again and for some reason, it will not cancel. Just keeps searching.

OK, try the following.

Disable Automatic Updates:
Start > Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Update > Change settings > "Never check for updates"
Reboot the system

Let's take a different approach. Please do the following.

Intall Update Manually Using wusa
1. Right-click on the Start
w8start.png
button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
wusa "C:\full\path\to\Update.msu"

3. Let me know if it says it was successful or if there are any errors.
