SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put

tags around the log to break up the text.

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

i could not attach the cbs.txt, it says overload

Re: sfc scan did not fix some corrupted files

Hi, But the scan results show no integrity violations in the scan conducted after your fix zip. The size of cbs.txt is 3.9 m.b

Re: sfc scan did not fix some corrupted files

Hi, I have given access. Pl confirm and also say, that this 3.9 m.b size and contents would be always the result, whenever i scan /sfc . is it?

Re: sfc scan did not fix some corrupted files

I can confirm that your issue has been resolved. They wouldn't always be the result as CBS.log gets larger with each new SFC scan and if you ever encounter errors while using it or while updating, simply start a new thread and one of us will assist you.

I'll mark the thread as solved.

Is sfc /scannow only scans the files integrity on the files when you first install?

Hi, I will be pleased if i get the clarification on the above. window xp sfc scan is correcting the system files from the famous i386 folder from the installation cd. Is it different in windows 7? Or it also scans and replace system files from the installation file stage without taking in to account , the changes in the files on the already available system files in the installation dvd , due to windows updates or service pack updates?
Why there are so much entries in sfc scan in general? Also why the size of the file cbs.log increases? Hope to get replies to the above

Re: sfc scan did not fix some corrupted files

Hello again :) SFC is excellent at scanning the Component Store directory (winsxs directory). It detects corruption there. It has the ability to replace the corrupt files with the files from the install media if they match. If not, someone has to provide you with a clean copy of the files required. As for the amount of entries, SFC scan logs everything it does into CBS.log, so it could help troubleshoot eventual problems that might arise. CBS.log filesize increases because every new update or SFC scan is logged inside. When it becomes too large, Windows automatically compressed it into a .cab file to reduce file size.

For academic Pl,
Where is install media? You mean the installation folder created while installing the windows ?
From your replies, i came to this conclusion.
1.Sfc scan now also scans only the install files at the time of installation of OS, to see whether it is corrupted or lack integrity.
2.If there are corrupted files, then it searches the same install folder to see the Winsxs folder ,a kind of store having the exact files and replace it with that file.
3.If the file in store is also corrupted, then we have to get it from other system , the same file to install it to get no error in sfc scannow in windows 7.
4. But from some other forums, i learnt that those corrupt files could be copied from install dvd, by using 7zip and using the procedure to browse to the folder and copy that to the same folder in our windows.
5. This is the huge task, made simple by your expert knowledge on the subject to quickly locate those from cbs.log.txt.
6. I also hear that winsxs folder is used to store files of the versions for all the files stored in install folder, for other versions of the file, so as to use it in case of compatibility issue in running applications and other tasks.
7. Those files that are corrupted are only found in the installation files and not on subsequent files .
I think that from your replies, the point noted in 4 and 6 are incorrect. ok?
One more query: why this winsxs folder is bulging day by day. As it is a store, deleting files become risky of entirely loosing windows needed files? How one could delete the temp files in winsxs folder. I noted the storage increase there quickly without our saving any extra files in that folder.
Expecting reply

Re: sfc scan did not fix some corrupted files

No, I mean the iso or the USB/DVD you're using to install the OS.
Windows Update can require certain files that have become corrupt and then SFC can help as it searches for good replacement copies within the winsxs folder. If none are found, it reports that in the CBS.log and when it's done by stating "Windows resource protection..."
That is possible, but only if you have the knowledge to do so, because there is an issue that has to be addressed and that is premission within the windows folder. These are nicely managed by SFCFix, because i does the job for you.
If one was not to take care of permissions, that could cause severe vulnerability issues on the system affected.
There are many versions of one file stored within the winsxs directory as new updates bring new versions.
It all depends which version of the file is corrupt. There are some files you can source from the install media, and others you have to extract from an update which has the file.
Winsxs folder stores all the system files. Every time Windows is updated, it changes and it grows.

Re: sfc scan did not fix some corrupted files

Hi, Thanks softwaremaniac for the wealth of informatio Now, i am sure that it is Winsxs folder that contains all the files that is required by the system. It is first as the size of the install size, i mean the entire files including the files in the other folder in the DVD and it grows in size to include those system files in windows update also. i am just curious to know more about the winsxs folder.
1. Does it mean that it is kind of recovery storage for even install files included in other folders in the DVD?
2. If So, does that mean, the reason for the size of windows 7 is given in DVD, as opposed to that of win xp. It contains a kind of duplicate files, of all the files included in the installation dvd and is acting as store for any error or corruption in system files. I mean if the size of the windows is say 4.4 gb, the winsxs folder occupies 2.2 gb in the install dvd?
3. I raised this type of question to microsoft also, but there was no point by point reply i received, but given huge links to look into. Those links are purely technical in nature without a ' normal user ( a lay man) could understand. Thanks for the technical sharing..
4. So, how to manage the winsxs folder? If it bulges, then how to manage that in c: drive? Can we delete files in there? pl
5. Then where is the file location of all the files extracted from the DVD in the windows ? Can we browse

Re: sfc scan did not fix some corrupted files

1. Not really, but all the vital files are there. When a file is corrupt, you can sometimes source a clean copy from a DVD.
2. Well, kind of. The install DVD does contain replacement manifest files and everything else from the winsxs folder, but only for that version for which the DVD is, i.e. 6.1.7600 for RTM build and 6.1.7601 for SP1.
3. No problem.
4. I do not recommend managing it. It does not take that much space. Even on an SSD, there's no need to mess around with them. Not to mention it is very dangerous because you could cripple your system.
5. The location is sources folders then sxs.

Hi, Thanks for clarifications
I have posted queries on some more points , but the post was not successful,
1. The size of my sxs is 5.2 gb, short time after install. I think it is huge , considering auto filling up folder by system itself.
2. Should we do the scan on a scheduled basis? because we will be downloading on daily basis.
3.How the source and winsxs files get corrupted? Is it because of abnormal shutdown or third party programs?
