Hello,

I have had this issue for the past 8 months since I installed a fresh copy of Windows 7 on a new HD. When I try to update it fails after about 5-10 minutes. My computer also indicates that it needs to be shut down to install an update, however I am not sure if this is the same update. When I shut my computer off, it tries to install an update and gets about 60% of the way through before just shutting off. As a result I have been putting my computer to sleep instead to avoid the failed attempt. I have attempted to try to manually install the update from Microsoft's update catalog but it did not work (or I didn't do it right...). Below is the details of the failed update:

2017-10 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB4041681)

Installation date: ‎10/‎15/‎2017 12:48 PM

Installation status: Failed

Error details: Code 8024200D

Update type: Important

(I also am having trouble uploading the CBS zip file, I apologize. It'll upload to 100% but nothing appears to select for the drag section.)

Thanks!

Hello! Yes I am, I also have not been able to get the CBS zip file uploaded. Not sure what I'm doing wrong with the attachment, but it loads to 100% and then gives me no option to attach.

Thanks!

Please download the following file to your desktop. Right-click on the file and choose Run as Administrator.
Dropbox - Reset_Windows_Update_History.bat

Allow it to finish.

Once, it finishes please reboot your machine and then check for updates again. Let me know how many updates show up that need installed.

To be certain, please try the following.

Remove Update Manually
1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following command into it, press enter
wusa /uninstall /KB:3205394

4. You should see one of the following two messages.

If it found the update you would have seen the following.

If it didn't find the update you would have received the following.

Re: Failed update: 2017-10 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 (KB4041681)

OK, thanks for double-checking. Please do the following.

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to SendSpace and just provide the link here.
