Hi,

today I have a tough problem for you! My Windows 10 pro 1703 version wouldn't let me upgrade to 1709. After several tries to fix the issue ( including sfc/ scannow and all kinds of variations of DISM - all finished without finding any error) I'm at the brink of terror.

Things I tried already:

- safemode
- cleanboot
- uninstall AV
- sfc and DISM
- Windows AIO repair (tweaking.com)
- unplug all usb
- unplug ethernet
- unplug 2. graphicscard
- uninstall uxstyle
- update and downgrade graphicsdriver
- driver update
- unplug monitors
- Antivirus and malware check
- over and underclocking pc/ram (as well as latencys)
- sfc/ fix

Problematic behavior of the system:

- stutter and flicker on 2 of my 4 monitors
- chubby/stuttering playback of netflix and amazon prime video
- explorer.exe crashes randomly
- freeze of open windows / explorer
- games crash and/or freeze the complete system
- premiere pro crash
- opening windows designs tab -> crash
- opening some settings in windows -> crash

It's not possible for me to clean install windows, because of important settings and programs.
Can somebody please help me?! I'm going crazy. I thought updating to 1709 would help me solve some of these issues.

Hello and welcome

Due to the precise nature of your corruption, you will receive help from a user named SleepyDude. He's one of our senior trainees here who's in his final phase of his studies and needs to gain some real world experience in specific areas of Windows Update. This means that he'll be assisting you, but that I will first need to double check and approve his fixes before he posts them to you. If anything this is a good thing for you because it means that you've got at least two of us watching over your thread, but it will unfortunately add a slight delay between each reply. I hope that you understand and can accept the need for us to train up new members in this way in order to carry on doing what we do here, however, if for any reason you object to this setup, I will happily take on your thread myself.

Thank you very much for your understanding. We'll be with you very shortly.

Hi,

thank you very much! Without you guys, i would be screwed! Take your time, if anything I'm glad that someybody can help me :DDD

Hi,

We need to know more about your machine and collect some logs.

Please tell us the Brand and Model of the machine or if custom build the Brand and Model of the Motherboard.

Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST)
  • Download FRST or FRST x64 and save it to the Desktop.
(Please pick the version that matches your operating system's bit type. If you don't know which version matches your system, try FRST if it say that is not compatible with your OS you have to use FRST64
  • Execute FRST/FRST64 right click on the icon
    FRST.gif
and choose Run as Administrator. Make sure all other windows are closed.
(When the Tool opens for the first time you must click Yes on the disclaimer.)
    FRST.png
  • Press Scan button.
  • It will produce a log called (FRST.txt) in the same directory the Tool is run from.
  • The first time the Tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt).
  • Please attach both logs to your post.

Hi,

Thanks for the logs. Can you check if you have the following files?
C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Rollback\setupact.log
C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Rollback\setupact.err

If you do attach them please.

Also can you confirm the following link is for the motherboard you have?
MAXIMUS VI HERO | Motherboards | ASUS USA

Hi,
Unfortunately I don't have this files in that directory. However the setup.exe won't start as of now, as well. So there are a few exe files, that won't start. Updating via windows update, it reaches 100% preparing, but after reboot nothing happens.

Hi,

That's ok.

We have to do some "Cleanup tasks" before we can focus on the upgrade problem.

There are remnants of the Avira Antivirus that you had previously that we have to remove and I would like that you Uninstall Spybot Search & Destroy because its outdated and generating some errors on the Windows Event log.

Please download ESET AV Remover tool from this page Uninstallers (removal tools) for common Windows antivirus software—ESET Knowledgebase see if you can remove Avira
if Avira isn't on the list download and run the Avira RegistryCleaner this will not remove everything please run another FRST scan and post the new logs.

Hi,

I tried your Av uninstaller. It hasn't found anything. No luck uninstalling Spybot, uninstaller is one of the exes that won't work. Deleted as much as I could manually. Avira reg cleaner worked!

I've attached the logs.

Hi,

Lets use FRST to remove some things first...

FRST Fix

!!! WARNING !!! The following fix is only relevant for this system and no other, running the script on another computer will not work and may cause problems...

  • Download the file View attachment Fixlist.txt and save it to the Desktop as fixlist.txt
(It's important that both files, FRST or FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work!)
  • Execute FRST/FRST64 right click on the icon
    FRST.gif
and choose Run as Administrator. Make sure all other windows are closed.
    FRST_Fix.png
  • Press the Fix button just once and Wait. After the fix the system needs to restart if the tool does not request it please Restart the computer.
  • The tool will make a log (Fixlog.txt) on the same location as FRST/FRST64 please post it in your next reply.

Edit: Another thing can you post a screenshot of your Disk Manager showing the System Drive expanded to show all partitions?

Despite my instructions above please continue to run FRST64 renamed as EnglishFRST64.exe.

Hi,

I've run frst64 with your fix. Went into reboot... and I'm stuck with bsod... inaccessible boot device. trying to fix boot at the moment.

update: nothing will work. windows cannot repair the boot procedure... that's a real problem there

If you need assistance, please let us know. A Restore Point was created just before the fix. If that was successful, then we can just restore back to the restore point.

FRST created a Restore Point can you select that point and restore?

Edit: I post at same time as Brian.

no unfortunately it tells me this (systemrecovery not activated) : IMG_20171120_211706.jpg The odd thing is, i just used the system recovery earlier this day. Just slight panic there

Can you translate the message for me please?

The FRST log also show a Restore Point created yesterday...

Please don't try other fix's.
