Vista Updates will not work after HD clone

Well I performed a hard drive clone a few months back and thought everything was fine. Then one day I noticed that the windows indexing / searching was not working. No big deal I just learned to deal without it. Now I realize my Vista updates have not been working since the clone, and Outlook Express has not been working since the clone. I have tried numerous things and suggestions that were given to me. I ran the Microsoft Fixit and it would not fix the problem. I also ran in aggressive mode and had no difference. I saw in a previous post the CBS files were uploaded and somebody was really slick in modifying the registry and fixing a persons problem. Would anybody be willing to help me? P.S. I upgraded from the original XPS M1530 hard drive which was I believe 220 gigs to a Seagate Hybrid 750 gig.

We'd be happy to help you but first we need a few more details on your problem. Could you post your CBS log please:

Export CBS folder


  1. Click the Start button
    StartButton_16x16.gif
    then click Computer.
  2. Double-click on the C: drive, under the Hard Disk Drives category, and then scroll down to, and double click on the Windows folder.
  3. Find and double click on the Logs folder.
  4. Right-click on the CBS folder, and select Copy.
  5. Go back to your Desktop, right-click on it, and select Paste. You should now see a copy of the CBS folder appear on your Desktop called CBS.
  6. Right-click on this new folder, and navigate through Send to, and select Compressed (zipped) folder.
  7. A new file, also called CBS (CBS.zip), but this time with a different icon, will be created.

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for the log. SFC detected one file as corrupt however this is nothing to worry about.

Can you generate an MGADiag log for us please:

I would also like you to download and install the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT). Make sure you save it to a convenient place as we will probably have to use this more than once and, as you will soon find out, it is quite a big file!

What is the System Update Readiness Tool?

I downloaded the program but I get error code seen below when I try to run.

Sorry, I tried to paste a print screen of the dialog box but it did not show up in the post. I am saving the program and will try to re-run
 
Ok I tried again and the dialog box reads : Windows Update Standalone Installer. The message is "Installer encountered an error: 0xc8000247"

Thank you for the MGADiag log and for letting me know about the SURT failing.

SFC Scan


  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
    button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

    Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt

  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Thanks. I was hoping to see a little more work being done in that SFC log but it's not going to happen. I have a suspicion about the cause of the MGADiag errors but I will ask our activation expert to take a look as you'll be in better hands :)

The problem here is the licensing store, I think....

The problem appears to be in the Licensing Store - please try the following.....

Recreate the Licensing Store with the correct data.

1) Open an Internet Browser window.
2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
3) Find the file CMD.exe
4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'

This may be simply a 'lost' registration of a dll - the problem is to work out which one.

First, please run the following command from an Elevated Command Prompt...

REGSVR32 C:\WIndows\System32\wintrust.dll

You should get a 'success' message - reboot and post a new report, and also please tell us what security software is currently installed, and ALL previous Anti-Virus installations.

For what it's worth, the error listing is actually a list of every file that the Software Licensing Service monitors - which is why we are looking more at a single source error, rather than looking for a mass of them
 
Ok I installed the intel driver. and I ran performed the REGSVR32 C:\WIndows\System32\wintrust.dll command. Still seeing the message for updates saying service is not running. Do you want another MGA report? Thanks for trying to work with me on this. I can tell you if and when this gets fixed I will be making a donation to the site. I have never received such fast and free help before. This is great.

Still no change - in that case, the usual solution for Win7 would be to rename the CATROOT2 folder and rebuild the database.
It's a procedure I've not applied in this circumstance in Vista - but it shouldn't hurt.



Please run the following commands in an Elevated Command Prompt

NET STOP CRYPTSVC
REN C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CATROOT2 CATROOT2OLD
NET START CRYPTSVC

once complete, leave the system alone for at 30 minutes to rebuild the database, then reboot and wait a further 30 minutes, and then run another MGADiag report.
Note that this may delete your Update History - but all updates will remain installed, and can be viewed in the Installed Updates listing.
 
Ok no problem. While I am doing that I need to give you the other information you requested. I am using Vipre Internet Security 2013 and have used Vipre for several years. No other anti-virus on the computer.
