Hi all, We have a Dell Inspiron laptop (running Vista) that will not install Windows Update KB3046017 (returns with error code: 80070057) and until this issue is resolved Windows Update remains on the taskbar and is constantly writing to the CBS log and using most all resources. This device is configured to have updates installed automatically. We noticed that when this condition surfaced Microsoft installed "Microsoft Office Powerpoint Viewer 2007". The device has Office 2007 installed, but only the Microsoft Word component. This update would not uninstall through the normal add/remove program procedure, but we successfully found and removed it in the Dell MediaDirect folder. This did not resolve this issue with KB3046017. I then ran sfc /scannow and the results, copied from the CBS log file indicate a problem that seems irrelevant: Cannot repair member file [1:24{12}]"settings.ini of Microsoft-Windows-Sidebar, etc. The sidebar has always been disabled and again, I think it may be a separate issue. Anyhow back to the Update issue. We think that the update may be intended for an Office product we do not have installed, but because this update is listed as critical we would like any feedback before we simply hide it. SFCFix.txt Microsoft Windows Vista Service Pack 2 - x86 Not using a script file. AutoAnalysis: SUMMARY: No corruptions were detected. AutoAnalysis:: directive completed successfully. Successfully processed all directives. SFCFix version 2.4.5.0 by niemiro has completed. Currently storing 0 datablocks. Also, We did run SURT and it returned no errors. Thanks

Hello and welcome

Due to the precise nature of your corruption, you will receive help from a user named LiquidTension. He's one of our senior trainees here who's in his final phrase of his studies and needs to gain some real world experience in specific areas of Windows Update. This means that he'll be assisting you, but that I will first need to double check and approve his fixes before he posts them to you. If anything this is a good thing for you because it means that you've got at least two of us watching over your thread, but it will unfortunately add a slight delay between each reply. I hope that you understand and can accept the need for us to train up new members in this way in order to carry on doing what we do here, however, if for any reason you object to this setup, I will happily take on your thread myself.

Thank you very much for your understanding. We'll be with you very shortly.

Thanks for the response.

I'll get back to this thread over the weekend, hopefully, and update it.

Again,
Thank You

As requested I'm attaching the log.

If the sidebar issue can be resolved that's great, but I'm more concerned about the KB3046017 update and if it's actually for this device.

Thanks again

Hello,

The Sidebar-related entry in CBS.log is not an issue, and does not require attention.

A manual attempt fails as well. I wasn't aware WU kept a log, thanks!

I want to add info that may or may not be of any use. Prior to Sept 20th we had run WU with KB3046017 being the only update available for install. After the failed install the graphics in the WU box changed to red (I guess to indicate a dangerous status). On Sept 20th I ran CHKDSK and after a reboot I ran WU and (IIRC) the update did install and the graphics were green. Since I do not use this device I was unaware the update reappeared on the WU list. I hadn't checked installed updates for confirmation I just assumed it installed correctly.

Thanks again.

This evening WU had 2 important updates available. The KB3046017 and a Creative webcam update.
The Creative update install was successful. TheKB3046017 failed again.
I also noticed that KB3046017 was installed on 2 other devices here. One running Win7 the other Win8.1 both had installation date of 8/12.
I opened event viewer on the Vista pc and found several errors (on 8/12) concerning the KB3046017 install and a warning that read:

Windows Servicing identified that package KB3046017 (Security Update) is not applicable for this system. Event ID 4374

This message is identical to the message I get when I attempt to install an update that is already installed so it may not be of any help.
