This started about 2 weeks ago. My videos are laggy no matter what media player i use. They are also laggy in YouTube and everywhere else that plays media. I've checked my drivers and they are all up to date. I was going to try a system restore but there are no restore points far back enough to use. Please help

The first thing I would recommend is to check whether another program or service is causing conflicts.

You may also want to try optimizing the system by doing maintenance tasks and changing performance settings for software and Windows.

If you are using Vista, the above still applies, but you may want to read this instead.

i did a clean boot and it was still lagging with just the microsoft services runnning. It's not just the video but the audio as well. It sounds all distorted. I did a performance optimize as well with no luck

Could you try something for me?

  • Download DPC Latency Checker from here -> DPC Latency Checker and save the .exe file to your desktop
  • Double click the dpclat.exe file and press "Yes" in the UAC popup that appears
  • The program will open. Maximise it.
  • Leave the program running until the whole screen (left-right) has a bar chart on. Make sure the system is idle at this point. Save a screenshot of this.
  • Close DPC Latency Checker and then start a video playing
  • Open DPC Latency Checker and do as before, wait until the whole screen is a bar chart and save a screenshot
  • Upload the screenshots here.

Do the following instructions on a normal boot, then a clean boot to compare the difference between them. So, you should have 4 screenshots - idle normal boot, video normal boot, idle clean boot and video clean boot.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask

Also, looking at your other thread, this may be a result of still having Verifier enabled. Make sure it is disabled. Verifier is only needed if you are having blue screens and it helps to track down driver conflicts by placing the system in a diagnostic state. That state can lead to lag on the system.

To disable Verifier, use the following steps.

Start Menu -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Right click Command Prompt -> Run as administrator -> Type the following command and then Enter:
Code:
verifier /reset
-> Restart your computer.

well i did the verifier reset and have not had any issues with video player, computer has speeded up considerably as well. I was using Windows Media Player and VLC Media Player. It was lagging on internet as well, YouTube Facebook ect. But i have watched several videos now with no issues what-so-ever. I'm going to keep watching videos for a couple hours just to make sure that it's fixed. If it starts messing up again then i will work on getting all the screen shots that you were talking about and i will post all my system info. Thanks for the help :)

Glad to help. :-}

Let us know once you are confident the problem is solved, or as you said, post back if you have further problems. Best wishes the problem is solved.

That's great! IIt wasn't a complicated fix after all then!

Are you looking for a guide that we use or one that Microsoft supplies?

We use Verifier with 3rd party drivers enabled to cause blue screens and then analyze the .dmps when troubleshooting via the forums.

There are probably better methods if you are planning on running it on your own system. Vir Gnarus would likely be the best source if you are looking for that type of analysis.

no issues thus far with media playback. Thanks again to everyone for the help. This site is absolutely amazing....keep up the great work
