[SOLVED] Very slow Boot after Windows Update

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Let's start with the following.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

Step#2 - SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
    button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

    Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

After my last post I restarted my computer and noticed it still takes very long to boot. The screen goes black for a while before the welcome screen and also stays on that screen for a while too, and then after that I have to wait at least 5-10 minutes before I can do anything because windows runs so slow starting up. I also noticed the bar at the bottom resembled the one in safe mode, so I restarted the computer again and it went back to normal but noticed Intel Rapid Storage wasn't running so I had to manually start it. After that I ran another SFC scan but it found no errors this time. I though the error it found before was causing the problem but now that it seems to be resolved I don't know what's causing the delay.

Let's do a couple more scans so I can direct you to the appropriate place for resolution of your issue.

Step#1 - FRST Scan
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Right click to run as administrator. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
3. Please ensure you place a check mark in the Addition.txt check box at the bottom of the form before running (if not already).
4. Press Scan button.
5. It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should now be the desktop)
6. Please copy and paste log back here.
7. Another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST64.exe) will be generated Please also paste that along with the FRST.txt into your reply.

Two things I noticed right away is that you are very low on disk space on your C:\ drive. You really need about 15% free for Windows to run optimally. Second I believe you have some bad blocks on your C:\ drive as well that need taken care of.

Please do the following.

Step#1 - ChkDsk Scan
1. Click your Start Orb in the lower left of your computer and type cmd in the search box.
2. Once the cmd program is found, right-click on it with your mouse and select Run as administrator as shown below.

3. Answer Yes when asked to allow.
4. You should now have a black window open that you can type in to.
5. Please type chkdsk and then press enter.
6. Chkdsk will start to run. Please allow it to finish. You will know it is running when you see text as follows.
Chkdsk.JPG

7. Download ListChkdskResult.exe by SleepyDude and save it on your desktop. If it's already downloaded to your desktop, just skip this step.
8. Right-click this file and select Run as administrator (Allow if prompted)and a text file will open (and also be saved on the desktop as ListChkdskResult.txt).
Please copy the contents of this file and paste into your next post.

Sorry for the late reply. I just finished running chkdsk, here is the log: View attachment ListChkdskResult.zip

I just noticed that the bad sectors has increased by 4 kb since the last time I ran the scan. I'm also starting to free up more space, now I have 19gb of free space instead of 12.

I did as you said and noticed only a slight difference. The welcome screen popped up faster but still took a while to load to the desktop and then it took 2-3 min before the rest loaded (desktop icons and internet connection).

Let's check out the health of your hard drive.

GSmartControl
Follow the instructions below to test your hard drive health with GSmartControl:

  • Download GSmartControl and save it on your Desktop;
  • Extract the content of the GSmartControl .zip archive and execute gsmartcontrol.exe;
  • Identify your drive in the list, and double-click on it to bring up it's window (usually you'll find your drive by it's size or it's brand name);
  • Go in the Perform Tests tab, then select Extended Self-test in the Test type drop-down list and click on Execute (this test can take a few hours to complete);
  • Once the test is over, the results will be displayed at the bottom of the window. Please copy and paste these results in your next reply;
  • Also, go in the Attributes tab and if you have any entries highlighted in red or pink, copy and paste their name in your next reply (or take a screenshot of the GSmartControl window and attach it in your next reply);

That's what I suspected unfortunately. Your Current_Pending_Sector count is currently 12. This is very bad and is an indication that your hard drive may fail or is currently failing. You should ensure that all your critical data is backed up so there is no data loss. Once this is done we can continue with options.

OK. I always like to have two tools tell us the drive is bad. So at this point you will need to either reformat your current drive and re-install everything (not suggested) or purchase a new hard drive and re-install your system. I can walk you through the process if you are not familiar with it but it will involved re-installing all of your programs, etc.

Is your Dell machine still under warranty?
Did this Western Digital Blue 1TB hard drive come with your machine or was it purchased separately?
Did your Windows 7 Ultimate Operating System come pre-intsalled on this machine or was it purchased separately (retail version)?

Let me know how you want to proceed.

This is what the warranty says:

The hard drive came with the machine.

I purchased windows 7 separately, windows 8 was pre-installed.

What do you suggest I do? Unfortunately, though, I can't afford a new drive, so that is currently not an option.

This is excellent news. I would contact Dell and let them know that your hard drive is going bad. Let them know the tests that you ran. They will likely want you to run their own Dell Diagnostics. If they do, they will let you know what to do. They will replace your hard drive for free since it is under warranty.

Let me know how the call goes.
