On a desktop running Windows 8.1 Pro (Lithuanian) I got a Get Windows 10 notification and attempted to upgrade to Windows 10 through Windows Update. The update process started, but after the first reboot, the update failed with error 800700a1.

Short of refreshing Windows 8.1 and losing my programs, I am looking for a solution to this problem.

Have tried these steps:
chkdsk c: /f (no errors)
sfc /scannow (didn't find any integrity violations)
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth (Error: 0x800f0906 The source files could not be downloaded)
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /StartComponentCleanup (Error: 14098 Component store corrupt)
Used Microsoft FixIt tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910336/en-us (reports "fixed", but doesn't solve the problem)
Ran SFCfix.exe, found 2 corruptions, fixed 1.
Did all this several times, going through trial and error.
After all these steps (and reboots) tried Windows 10 upgrade again, only to fail with the same error 800700a1

This forum is my last hope, will be very grateful for any help.

Yes, it was, and I guess, it still is. To protect the previous user's files, his profile folder was moved to the second partition at d:\users\, and a symbolic link to that folder was created in c:\users\. Although the computer recently was moved to another place, the users were switched, but the symbolic link for the previous user along with his profile is still there. Since this PC is at my work, and now it's past work hours (in Lithuania), anything you would suggest me to do will have to wait until tomorrow. But I welcome you questions, maybe I will be able to answer them, like in this case. I'm only guessing, it would help, if I completely deleted the previous user's profile and the symbolic link, because it's not needed anymore?

Code:
2015-09-10 14:11:33, Error SP CRelocateOS: Failed to write D:\Users\Egidijus to the D:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\SetupPlatform.ini config file. Error: 0x800700A1[gle=0x000000a1]

If the user is Egidijus and that account is no longer required, yes, deleting that account from the machine may allow the installation to complete.

If the upgrade fails again, attach setupact.log

Sorry for the late reply. I was busy with my work, but anyway I should have replied earlier.
You helped me pinpoint the cause of the problem, namely the redirected user profile was getting in the way of the upgrade process. After I deleted the user profile and its symbolic link, everything went on smoothly, I was finally able to successfully upgrade to Windows 10. Many thanks for your efforts.

Regards from Lithuania,
Gintaras.
