I have a VM with Server 2019 Standard on it and KB5038283 and KB5039217 will not install. I haven't been able to install updates on this server for a long time. I following the forum posting instructions. I ran the sfc, dism, the component scanner software. The logs are attached. I've also tried the common things like stopping the Windows Update service and renaming the software distribution folder. When I install the updates it says it is successful and I reboot the server but it rolls back the changes. Thank you in advance for helping out. I'll gladly make a donation to Sysnative for any help.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative,

Upload the setupapi.dev.log file
  • Open Windows Explorer and browse to the C:\Windows\INF folder.
  • Right-click on the file setupapi.dev.log and choose Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Now the message will appear, "Windows cannot create the Compressed (zipped) Folder here. Do you want it to be placed on the desktop instead?"
  • Click on the Yes button here.

  • Attach the file setupapi.dev.zip in your next reply.

  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt.
  • Post the logfile (SFCFix.txt) as attachment in your next reply.

SFCFix.txt is attached. Also, this server does have RMM software (ConnectWise Automate) on it that installs the Windows updates, but even when I switch it to do Windows update not through ConnectWise the patches still fail.

It's an driver issue, so here's the next fix.

Warning: This fix was written specifically for this system. Do not run this fix on another system.
  • Save any work you have open, and close all programs.
  • Download the attachment SFCFixScript.txt and save it to your desktop.
  • Drag the SFCFixScript.txt file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it.

  • SFCFix will launch, let it complete.
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt.
  • Post the logfile (SFCFix.txt) as attachment in your next reply.

Afterwards attempt to update again. If if fails attach a new copy of the CBS logs as well as the Setupapi.dev.log.

Ok, I'll try to install the updates tonight and let you know the results tomorrow.

I can install updates now, thank you so much for your help! I just made a donation to Sysnative. I'm curious, does the Sysnative Windows Update Academy cost anything? I've been in IT for a long time but I don't know how to troubleshoot Windows Update in depth like you guys do, I'd be glad to help out and/or pay for the training materials.

Hi,

(...) I'm curious, does the Sysnative Windows Update Academy cost anything?

No, the Windows Update Academy is free to join and explained in this thread how it works and what is expected from new members!
