Please be patient with me as I try to explain my problem :smile9: I've never posted on a forum before. HP 530 laptop. Factory installed Vista Home Basic.Celeron(r) m cpu 1.8 ghz. 2 gb ram. 32 bit.
I installed a different HDD and my OS from recovery cd's. I have yet to reinstall files and programs from backups. Windows Update has not worked as it should. Some updates have installed and some failed. I've not tried much to install the failed updates using the error codes.

WHAT I HAVE TRIED: (not necessarily in this order)
1. every MS Fixit I came across
2. tried to install MS Fixit 'suite' , 27 fixits, but wouldn't install/run
3. Disk Cleanup, Disk Check, Defrag
4. factory installed HDD test- passed
5. factory installed Memory Test- passed
6. reset Update Agent
7. ran Update Readiness Tool
8. tried to install latest version of Update Exe- failed
9. SFC- reported some corrupt files could not be repaired.
10. MS Malicious Software Removal Tool- results -0
11. update diagcab 'tool'- failed to install /run

I considered manual download of Sp1 and SP2 but would like Updates to run in Auto- mode for peace of mind.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks for your response, Brian. Sp2 installed, a few more updates, then a new Windows Update Agent version 7.6.7600.256. Things haven't gone well since then. Getting into Chrome and IE has been ridiculously slow. Did a Restore Point to the date I thought the WUAgent was installed (it didn't show in Update History) and when I checked in WUAgent properties it was still that version. Any suggestions? 1. should I keep this version or try to get the previous version? 2. If I should try to get the previous version could you help me with info as to how to do this? 3. Is this version the root cause of slow downloads and slow web page access?

The Windows Update agent wouldn't have anything to do with your slowness on web pages. What I would suggest is to continue to check for Windows updates until all critical/important updates are installed. Keep installing and rebooting until all of them have been installed. Then we can address any remaining issues.

Brian:

OK, will do. Should priority be given installing failed updates before attempting to get new updates? Thanks.

Brian:

I think I have completed downloading updates through Windows Updates. I hesitate to say this but I think this thread is solved. When I ask Update for more updates, I get a blank stare so I presume problem solved.

A note to all as to what I think was the cause of my Windows Update issues. I had reinstalled the Vista OS. IE didn't work properly after the reinstall. Because I had no intentions of using IE I thought I would uncheck boxes of settings inside IE, thinking this would save me resources which could be used other places in the computer. I think this could be the reason for the problems I had with downloads and installs of updates, Fixits, etc. Things seemed to go much better after I reset IE settings to defaults.

You mentioned in one of your posts, Brian, that after installing all the updates that you would address any other issues. I have high CPU usage issues but Ithink that would be addressed in another thread, Right? or would you want to tackle this as well as?

Thanks for your help, Brian.
