[SOLVED] Updates failing to install + sfc corruptions

Hello everyone,

I would like to ask for some assistance regarding Windows Update problem and some sfc corruption which I found when trying to troubleshoot WU problem. I have 4 important updates and 2 optional which fails to install. I'm using Windows 8.1 x64.

1 of 4 important shows like installed but after checking for updates again, it's listed again. That update is Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538242). Other three are Update for Windows 8.1 for x64-based Systems (KB3035583), Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538243) and Update for Windows 8.1 for x64-based Systems (KB2962409).

The optional updates which are failing are:
Microsoft Silverlight (KB3056819) - installation shows as successful but reappears after checking for update again.
Update for Windows 8.1 for x64-based Systems (KB3013769)

The error I'm getting is Code 80070bc9, except for KB2538243 where I get error Code 64C. SFC corruptions can be seen in my cbs log and I would like also to sort that out if possible.

I recently started to encounter this issue, not sure how it started, but WU refused to install and even download any update. I used program Windows 8 Manager to run some fixes, and did registry cleaning, and this is the first time I used any tuning tool and I never had any need for it, but I didn't have any idea what else to do. My system was always up to date, it's installed over 1 year ago, not sure how some of these old updates appeared, maybe it's because I used mentioned tool.

I run the SFCfix tool and I'm attaching the log. I'm also attaching the cbs log folder. Thanks in advance.

I'm sorry I don't use Win8. However, my understanding is that Silverlight is a buggy program, at least in Win7. It supposedly enhances Netflix, but I have never used it and my Netflix is just fine.

Thanks for reply, but I don't think that Silverlight is the cause for the Windows Update issues.
 
Great. Thanks. I figured he is not on the team, but I appreciate his effort to help. But his post got me thinking, and I figured that I don't use Silverlight for anything so I tried to remove it but I couldn't because it asked for Silverlight disc. I used some Microsoft FixIt which was successful and I removed the Silverlight. This didn't help with WU, but it maybe could help with troubleshooting the problem I have.

Please be aware that Sysnative staff do not recommend the usage of registry cleaners/tools due to the following facts:

  • registry tools can cause irreparable damage to your Operating System
  • registry tools can, as a result of the above, render your pc to be inoperable.

OK, back to your issue. This will likely take several rounds of fixing to get resolved. Please start with the following.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

Step#2 - Verify Corruption is fixed
1. Right-click on the Start

button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
 sfc /scannow

3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter.
copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"

4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Please upload CBS.txt to this thread

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Hi,

Thanks for your assistance. I did as you asked. Corruptions are not still present. I'm attaching the files. Just to mention that I have backup of removed registry keys which this program made, so I can restore if necessary.

Your zip file is corrupt. Can you try using the built in Windows Compression? Right-click on the file you want to compress and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. Then attach. Thanks.
 
I don't think it's corrupt, I used latest archive format and maybe that's why you could not open it. Anyway, attaching it again.

Thank you. I guess I can't open the latest and greatest archives. I was able to open this one however. Here is round two of fixes. Please do the following.

One more time please. Looks like your machine needs the uncompressed versions of these files.

Logs attached. What now? Just to mention that more Optional update appeared, but none can be installed. But new update which was published yesterday installed without problems. Maybe these are all old updates which are already installed but appears on WU because of registry cleaning?

It's likely that any updates that were ready to install while we fixed the corruption will have to be manually downloaded and installed. All future updates will work without issue. Before we do that however I would like to do one more check. Please do the following.

Step#1 - DISM /RestoreHealth Scan
Warning:this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Right-click on the Start
    w8start.png
    button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
  2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter. If prompted to overwrite the existing file go ahead.
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Please zip/upload to this thread.

The restore operation completed successfully. The component store corruption was repaired.

Perfect. You are good to go. As mentioned, you may need to download and manually install any updates that were showing while we were fixing the corruption. All future updates will install successfully.

Thanks for your help so far, but it seems I'll need it a little more. It seems that registry cleaning was indeed bad idea and it broke windows disc cleaner. So I restored registry backup which that tool made and disc cleaner is now working. Also, Visual C++ updates are not showing any more, nor optional updates. I'm now left with two updates which I can't install.

- Update for Windows 8.1 for x64-based Systems (KB2962409) - I tried to download and install it but I got this error message: This update is not applicable to your computer.
- Update for Windows 8.1 for x64-based Systems (KB3035583) - Not available for download.

For both updates I'm getting error: Code 80070BC9.
 
Please start with the following.

Step#1 - Run Windows Repairs

1. Download Windows Repair (All-in-One) Portable to your desktop.
2. Once the file is downloaded, right-click on the file on your desktop and choose Extract All...

3. Keep the defaults and click the Extract button.
4. A folder named tweaking.com_windows_repair_aio will be extracted to the desktop. Once the extraction is complete the folder will open.
5. Inside this folder, there is a folder named Tweaking.com - Windows Repair. Open this folder as well.

6. Double-click on Repair_Windows.exe to open. Note: Please make sure all of your programs are closed and anything you were working on is saved as we will be rebooting.
7. When the program opens, click the Repairs tab and click the Open Repairs button.
8. A backup of your registry will be made. After a few moments you will have many options from which you can choose.
9. Please click the Unselect All button and then click to enable only the following ones:

14 - Remove Temp Files
17 - Repair Windows Updates


10. Ensure the Restart check box is selected and click the Start Repairs button in the lower right of the screen. This may take some time to run so be patient.

11. Once the fixes are complete you will be prompted to restart your machine. Answer Yes.
