[SOLVED] Update to Microsoft Mouse & Keyboard Center v.11.1 64 bit fails

I can’t update Microsoft’s Mouse & Keyboard Center to v.11.1 for 64 bit. The error message I get when trying to install it is “Setup cannot install this software because your computer does not meet the system requirements.”

I have tried to solve the problem of installing the Mouse & Keyboard Center software by following all but one of the steps on Microsoft’s support page, “Troubleshoot installing Intellipoint, Intellitype, or LifeCam software,” which, despite the title, seems to apply to this software too. Specifically, I’ve made sure I have the latest version of the software from Microsoft’s site, that Windows Installer service is set to Automatic, I have the latest version (5.0) of Windows Installer, and I’ve tried a clean startup with clearing the Temp folder just before installation, with all programs closed. I've successfully updated .NET Framework with KB4471987 for 2018-12.

The only step I didn't try is uninstalling my current version of the Mouse & Keyboard software before trying to install the new version, for fear of losing it altogether.

I’d appreciate any help you could give.

Thanks,

Dennis Emberling

This didn't work at all. I tried everything in the article.

I don't think I have error 1603. The error message I get when trying to install it is “Setup cannot install this software because your computer does not meet the system requirements.”

In following the article's suggestions, I had to uninstall the drivers and present version of the software for the Microsoft Natural Ergonomic 4000 keyboard. Before I did that, I used Backup/Restore to create a system image of my C: drive (Windows and apps only). But now I can't restore that image either. Trying it through Backup & Restore/Recover system settings on your computer/Advanced Recovery Methods/Use a System Image... produces this error when I click Restart after declining to back up anything again: Failed to restart the computer. Windows cannot restart the computer into the Windows Recovery Environment to complete the recovery operation.

So I tried to get into the Windows Recovery Environment by pressing F8 just before the Windows logo appears on a boot, but none of the choices were what the Windows 7 Ultimate Help Menu said I needed: "Repair Your Computer" or "System Image Recovery" or anything like it. It was just the usual screen to allow you to go into Safe Boot, etc.

Then I tried booting with a Windows repair disk I had made a year ago, but that failed with a Windows Boot Manager error #oxc00000e9 "unexpected i/o error has occurred;" then something about an incompatibility with something attached to the computer. I unplugged the speaker, Ethernet, & mouse cables, leaving only keyboard and video, tried again, with same result. Then I tried booting with my original Windows 7 installation disk, but got the same error message.

Then I plugged everything back in and restarted Windows normally, which booted up fine, except now I have no Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center software at all, so my customization of my keyboard and its programmable buttons are all gone. Great.

Help.

I know you did not have this particular error, but there were some tricks that I thought may help. Sorry to hear that the issue is now even worse. Please provide me with the model of your mouse/keyboard.

Is the folder under Program Files still present?

Are there traces in the Device Manager?

Yes, the folder is still there.

Device Manager shows an HID Keyboard Device under Keyboards, but not the Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard center or Keyboard 4000 that it used to show. It shows a HID-compliant consumer control device unter Human Interface Devices. Both these show generic Microsoft drivers from 6/21/2006.

Please take a screenshot of the contents of the folder.

The folder and all its subfolders are all empty.

No, I haven't tried installing an older version. But the post and thread about error message 1603 explains that he tried that too, and that it didn't work either.

The whole point of this exercise in the first place was to update my version of this Microsoft software, since the version I had, v.2.7.133.0, has a few bugs. I have tried to update it for at least a year or two as new versions came out, but none of them ever installed. It may not even be possible to find an older version to try, and I don't want to just try version after version.

Some things I read on the web about this problem indicate Microsoft has known about it for some time now. Maybe they have come up with a fix.

I don't know why you're trying to get me to retry the same thing with the download of v.11.1 from Microsoft. As I explained earlier, I've already twice downloaded the latest version of 11.1 from Microsoft's webpage for this software. I have it. It's called MouseKeyboardCenter_64bit_ENG_11.1.exe.

Do you actually have any idea why this is happening or what to do about it, or are you just cycling through the standard things to try, all of which I've tried before?
