I have a 5 years old laptop came with Windows 8.1, a few days ago, I reinstalled the OS, some updates were installed, but after KB2919355 was installed, it stuck at "Checking for updates", the green bar just kept running, no new update was found.

I have tried various suggestions available on internet, but all failed.

Could someone suggest a solution?

Restart Windows in Safe Mode w/networking.

Download Windows Repair (All-in-One) Portable

  • Extract the tweaking.com_windows_repair_aio.zip to c:\Windows\TEMP the zip will extract to a folder called Tweaking.com - Windows Repair
  • Execute the file Repair_Windows.exe from the Tweaking.com - Windows Repair folder, accept the Security warning and the EULA
  • Click the button Jump To Repairs
  • Click the Open Repairs button to access the following screen:
    WindowsRepair.png
  • Click the box All Repairs to uncheck all the boxes
  • Check only the following boxes:
    • 16 - Repair Windows Updates
  • Check the box Restart/Shutdown System When Finished > Restart System
  • Click the Start Repairs button
  • When the system reboots, attempt the update again.

The repair did not work, the "Checking for updates" green bar kept running over 5 minutes and did not stop.

1. I let the green bar running, it stopped and display "No updates are available".

2. This fault only affects windows update, updates from other source, such as from Samsung, can load and install.

3. The green bar of "Searching online for software" of "Update Driver Software" under" Device Manager", also kept running and did not show any message, pressing the "Cancel" button cannot end the process.

  1. Download KB3173424 and KB3138615 from Microsoft website taking care to select x64 for a 64 bit machine and x86 otherwise, and to select the original language of the system of your computer.
  2. From control panel, run the troubleshooter “Fix problems with Windows Update.” with administrator rights. It has the advantage to stop windows update service.
  3. Delete %windir%\SoftwareDistribution (e.g. C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution): right click on the folder and Delete with administrator rights. To save space you may also delete the SoftwareDistribution.old or SoftwareDistribution.bak folders you can find.
  4. Stop your internet connection (unplug LAN cable, switch to airplane mode)
  5. Install KB3173424 then KB3138615 in this order. You may be prompted that installation will be done without internet connection: press the button to agree.
  6. Re-start your computer, then re-activate internet connection. Even if it is fixed, it may take a while to check for updates, so be patient.

One thing might be of interest to you, after repairing the Windows with Tweaking, every time the laptop was turned on, the temperature rose quickly, I did not measure the actual temperature,I felt the laptop with my hand, it was very hot, this afternoon, I reinstalled the Windows again, the temperature returned to as it was before the repair.

There is no relation between the two. My repair cleaned temp files and WU cache, which could not have influenced the operating temperature of your machine, but thanks for the info.

Which updates have been installed since the reinstall?

I have reinstalled Windows 8.1, and I did not install any updates, so I cannot tell you what updates I had installed after the reinstall prior to the latest reinstall, but the software I installed were Windows updates , Video and Wlan driver updates issued by Samsung, Google Chrome and free Avast Antivirus.

I have also noted the Windows 8.1 in the laptop did not keep a complete update history, the number of updates kept in the update history was much less than the number of updates downloaded and installed, unlike in other device, the history keeps a full record, including those failed and cancelled.

I think it will be difficult for you to find the cause of the fault without the laptop on hand, so please do not spend further effort on this issue.

My laptop is permanently activated for Windows 10, I will installed the new version Windows 10 in the laptop when the new version is launched, if it works well I will keep it.

Thanks.
