G'day,
I hope you can help me with an uninstallable update.
OS - Windows 10 64bit Ver 1909 (build 18363.959)

Windows Update will not install 2020-09 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1909 for x64-based Systems (KB4574727)

I have tried repeatedly to check for and install updates, by the retry button, but this has the effect of the same problem
of an erroneous installation occurring.
The end result of the check for updates is the 'Updates Failed' message, and the further message of
2020-09 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1909 for x64-based Systems (KB4574727) -Error 0x800f0900

There is a notification that the 'Feature update to Windows 10, version 2004' is available, and when I attempt to install this
(without having been able to install the 2020-09 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1909 for x64-based Systems (KB4574727))
the installation of the Feature Update, Version 2004, also fails.

I have ran sfc /scannow, from an Administrator cmd prompt, but only get the message:
Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service.
I have ran some suggested DISM commands from an Administrator cmd prompt (cannot remember which),
but all either partially complete or do not start, and at times with the error code and explanation of
'Error: 0x8000ffff DISM failed. No operation was performed. For more information, review the log file.'
I have ran SFCFix, which has not solved the error situation.

Hoping you can help solve this for me.
Thank you for your time and effort.

Hiya all,
I know this is a 'common' problem.
Anyone interested?
Do I need to provide more info?
Cheers

Hi!

Please start with this check:

GSmartControl
Follow the instructions below to check your SMART status with GSmartControl:

  • Download the portable version of GSmartControl and save it on your Desktop;
  • Extract the zip file to your Desktop. Open the folder gsmartcontrol-1.1.3-win64 which should be located on your Desktop and double-click gsmartcontrol.exe to launch the program.
  • Identify your drive in the list (if recognized by the tool), and hover your mouse over it.
  • You should see something called: SMART status. It will either read: Enabled, in which case you should do the following:
  • Double-click on it to bring up its window (usually you'll find your drive by its size or its brand name);
  • Go to the Self-Tests tab, then select Extended Self-test in the Test type drop-down list and click on Execute (this test can take a few hours to complete);
  • Once the test is over, the results will be displayed at the bottom of the window. Please copy and paste these results in your next reply or take a screenshot;
  • Also, go in the Attributes tab and if you have any entries highlighted in red or pink, take a screenshot of the GSmartControl window and attach it in your next reply;
  • Please note: If the SMART Status reads: Unsupported, stop and let me know.

G'day, thanks for helping.
Excuse me for the late reply, I've been busy getting another SSD to make backups of the System before
this problems' troubleshooting is attempted.
I've noticed that the program GSmartControl performs a surface test of Hard Drives. My system now runs SSDs.
I swapped out the original HDDs, and now run Win10 from drive C: on a Samsung SSD 850 PRO 512GB.
All of the OS runs from the Samsung drive, except for the 'Documents' and 'Downloads' folders that I've deliberately
moved to the second internal SSD ( partition I: of the PLEXTOR PX-512M5Pro SSD) of this laptop.
There are also some files and folders that windows has put there, and other files and folder (not OS) that I've decided
to place there, as below.

The output of GSmartControl Extended Self test is as below.
It has been run several times because I couldn't believe that I hhad done it correctly,
as each test only took a few seconds to complete.

There was no highlighted entries in the Attributes Tab

Thank you for your time.
