Aura, my Lovely,

Thanks for prompt response. Sorry for not including SURT file, I got confused having to resize the .doc file.

Now I can't find the paperclip to attach it. I should have stayed in bed.

Can you make sense of the text, below?

Aura, ma jolie,

C'était bien facile.

Well, the way you explained it made it seem so. How do you get to know these things? Brilliant.

I may be getting carried away by the wording at the foot of the log "Summary:
Seconds executed: 1254

Fixed 5 errors
CBS MUM Corrupt Total count: 5
Fixed: CBS MUM Corrupt. Total count: 5
Fixed: CBS Paired File. Total count: 5 "

I haven't yet retried the updates, I was in a hurry to thank you for your help to an old man.
Oh, what it is to be young and wise.

I'm a Windows Update Trainee here on Sysnative, this is how I learned all that :) And there's still so much I need to learn too. Now that the errors reported by SURT have been fixed, we'll run SFC to make sure there's nothing left before retrying the updates.

System File Checker (SFC)
Follow the instructions below to run a SFC scan on your system and to provide the CBS log in your next reply;
  • On Windows Vista & 7, click on the Windows Start Menu, then enter cmd in the search box, right-click on the cmd icon and select
    Spcusrh.png
    Run as Administrator
  • On Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • On Windows 8.1, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • Enter the command below and press on Enter;
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
    Note: There's a space between "sfc" and "/scannow";
  • Once the scan is complete, enter the command below and press on Enter
    Code:
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  • A file called cbs.txt will have appeared on your Desktop. Upload the file on Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive and post the download URL for it here;
Note: Please note that the CBS.log is volatile, which means that if you don't upload it after the SFC scan is completed, it won't contains the information from the scan anymore. So archive it and upload it as soon as you can.

Aura,

That Dropbox was much harder than your clear, concise directions.
Nom d'un chien!
I'd tried to enrol before but gave up and stuck to MailBigFile. This time I had greater motivation: YOU had asked me.
If my maths and knowledge of horology are correct, you have probably finished your shift. Thanks for your help.

If I've struggled successfully with Dropbox, this should be what you requested:

Sorry I can't find a bunch of Fleurs de Lys smiley.

Well we have a flower smiley :rose: Also yes, my shift is from 8 to 4, but I had an exam tonight at 6 so I just got back home.

Also, your CBS.log is now clean. Can you try reinstalling your Windows Updates now? :)

Hi, Aura,
A red rose would be suitable for Olde England but may be perceived as provocative ... :smile9:

I trust that you were not too exhausted by your efforts on my behalf to give a good account of yourself in the exam. I imagine that it would have been "a breeze" for you.

As you suggested, I ran the updates. All bar one installed nicely. The rogue one: KB3031432 returned the error 8024200D. It is 2.57am local time and perhaps a little late for a pensioner to come to terms with this circumstance. However, subject to having slept on it, I fancy the best thing would be to repeat the performance and start another thread. With any luck you will be spared collecting that. Your exemplary devotion, above and beyond the call of duty, should (if there is any justice) prevent your having to deal with me again.

Heaven knows when I shall emerge from sleep after an exciting day, but I look forward to another successful encounter with technology.

Many thanks for making (for me) an impossible task turn into an entertaining and pleasant experience.

Best wishes for success in your learning experience,
x

I trust you had a well-deserved restful night.

Right. "Updates" reports "no new updates" but still shows the above as "Failed".
I ran SURT (attached) which reports "no errors detected".
In a rare episode of optimism I am inclined to accept that everything is tickety-boo but would appreciate the observations of an expert. What think you?

Yup I'm up now and I'm at work as well! Alright, since SFC and SURT return clean logs, let's do the following.

EndqYRa.png
SoftwareDistribution - Rename
Follow the instructions below to rename the folders in SoftwareDistribution.
  • On Windows Vista & 7, click on the Windows Start Menu, then enter cmd in the search box, right-click on the cmd icon and select
    Spcusrh.png
    Run as Administrator
  • On Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • On Windows 8.1, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • Enter the commands below one at the time (press Enter to send it);
    • net stop wuauserv
    • ren %SystemRoot%\SoftwareDistribution\Download DL.bak
    • net start wuauserv
    • wuauclt.exe /updatenow
This will trigger a check for updates, so take a look in your Windows Update panel after to see if any updates are found.

Hi,

Done that. "No new updates".

What if I removed the "Failed" update from the "Installed Updates list"? Would this be picked up and offered again or just jigger the whole thing?
Silly suggestion??
x
p.

Before we attempt that, is the failed update still KB3031432? If so, try to download and install it manually.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=45683

If it fails, upload the following files for me.

C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Yes, it's KB3031432.
Having followed the procedure it reported "KB3031432 is already installed on this computer".

One of the files you requested is "too big" and the other "access denied" so I've tried to Dropbox them.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/u2de2mll3hsadsa/WindowsUpdate.log?dl=0

https://www.dropbox.com/s/ryg025mtlc25r8e/CBS.log?dl=0

Does that work for you?

Sorry ... I'm in a deluge of phone calls. "Men can't multi-task".

Well, if the KB3031432 is already installed on your system, then I guess there's no more problem. We can verify that easily however.

Search for a Windows Update - Command Prompt
Follow the instructions below to search a Windows Update manually via the command prompt.
  • On Windows Vista & 7, click on the Windows Start Menu, then enter cmd in the search box, right-click on the cmd icon and select Run as Administrator
  • On Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • On Windows 8.1, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • Enter the command below (you can copy/paste it, to paste in the command prompt, right-click inside it and select Paste):
    • wmic qfe | find "KB3031432"
  • If the update is found, this command will return a line with the installation KB name, installation and Microsoft Support link for it. If it's not, nothing will appear;
  • Let me know if the update was found or not;

H'mm,

After a few moments thought, it returned nothing. Not even a "Thank you for asking."

Alright, let's try something else.

rONW46K.png
Uninstall a Windows Update - Command Prompt
Follow the instructions below to uninstall a Windows Update manually via the command prompt.
  • On Windows Vista & 7, click on the Windows Start Menu, then enter cmd in the search box, right-click on the cmd icon and select Run as Administrator
  • On Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • On Windows 8.1, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • Enter the command below (you can copy/paste it, to paste in the command prompt, right-click inside it and select Paste):
    • wusa /uninstall /KB:3031432
  • Let me know the outcome of the command: either it uninstall the update or either it says that the update isn't installed on the system;

I tried with and without the colon after "KB" and the report was "... KB3031432 not found on this computer" (without colon). When I entered KB3031432 (no colon) I got a page of "how to enter" paths.
"Left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing"?

This is weird indeed. I'll ask my colleagues what they do in that kind of situation. The standalone package installer (.msu) reports that the update is already installed, but the commands I made you enter says otherwise. If you go in your list of installed updates, do you see it listed (not the installation history).

It didn't seem as though you "made" me enter them. It appeared to be a suggestion or invitation for my benefit. :smile9:

KB3031432 does not appear in the "Installed Updates" folder. I wonder if it was included in error with other updates. A question for bigger (and younger) brains than mine.

I apologise for creating such an amount of work for you but console myself with the thought that it's all part of life's rich pageant for you, and the fact that I am no longer scared of Dropbox; indeed having resorted to it uninstructed as the files were too large to attach. So thank you for that, too.
