Hi Folks,

We have a another server which is failing when trying to install the latest cumulative updates from Windows. In this case there is an error code to follow - 0x80073701.

Research online has pointed us towards possible system file corruption as the problem. We have completed the following steps to troubleshoot:
- Ran sfc /scannow multiple times and rebooted each time
- Ran DISM RestoreHealth command and rebooted
- Ran DISM RestoreHealth and pointed it to original windows server OSinstall source files and rebooted
- Ran Windows troubleshooter (as admin) (undertook suggested action delete and redownload updates but didn’t work)
- Tried manually downloading and installing the update

We had this issue initially with the 2020-05 Cumulative update but the issue has persisted when the 2020-06 Cumulative update was released and Windows attempted to install that instead.

Any help is appreciated if you can suggest other steps we can take!

Thanks in advance,
Shane

Hi there,

Thanks for your response. Step 1, 2 and 3 had been completed previously.

I have run the SFCFix.exe from step 4, which found no corruption. I have uploaded a zip folder now containing the results of the SFCFix and the entire CBS folder, taken just after the SFCFix completed. You can download the folder here: https://secureshare.techguard.ie/link/sUPdG5yzzNCXuqHxUiLPIQ

Let me know if you need any additional information!

Thanks,
Shane

Hi!

Got the info I need:

FRST Registry Search
1. Click your Start button and type in cmd.
2.After you find the Command Prompt, right click on it and select Run as Administrator.
3. Copy and paste the following into the Command Prompt:

reg load HKLM\COMPONENTS C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\COMPONENTS

4. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
5. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
6. Copy and paste KB4343887 into the Search box and click the Search Registry button.
7. When the scan is complete a notepad window will open with the results. Please attach this to your next reply. It is saved on your desktop named SearchReg.txt.

Hi,

Thanks for your response. I have done that now and attached the SearchReg.txt file to this post.

Let me know what you would suggest next

Thanks,
Shane

Hi,

I have tried to attach again here.

Else if that doesn't work you can also download it from this link: SearchReg.txt

Let me know if this works for you!

Thanks,
Shane

Hi!

Please run this fix, reboot when able and then retry updates.

Step#1 - FRST Fix
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Download the attached fixlist.txt and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
3. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
4. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
5. When finished FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply.

fixlist.txt

Hi,

Thanks for those steps. Please see attached fixlog.txt

Looks like this has resolved the issue as the latest 2020-06 Cumulative update KB4561616 has installed successfully after the FRST64 tool completed its fixing operation.

Thanks very much for the assistance, it's been great to get this issue resolved and hopefully we have less issues when the next cumulative update rolls around

Shane
