One PC out of 4 in a domain (DC is Windows 2012 R2 Essentials) can not perform Windows Updates. The error code is: 80072F8F is displayed each time the check for updates button is clicked. The PC in question is running Windows 7 Professional SP1.

I can't upload the CBS.zip by dropping SFCFixScript on SFCFix.exe - doesn't appear as an attachment to the post ????

Hi there EWH,

Have you verified that the system date and time are correct?

Thanks for your reply.

Yes - I have checked the system time and date as well as the BIOS time.

I have also tried everything imaginable from MS and other sites (more than 6 hours of time wasted).

So, I finally resorted to using WSUS Offline Updater (free) to bring the system up to date. That solved my problem to the extent of being able to install client software that had been failing due to a needed MS update.

It did not, however, fix the underlying problem. Windows Update still does not work on this PC and continues to throw the 80072F8F error. At this point any more effort would be a waste.

The system will be used for the next 4 months and then either rebuilt or replaced.

I could take a look at the logs if you would like.

Please zip and attach C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log

Code:

Does this machine have a firewall product installed? If so, try turning it off temporarily.
Try visiting the page https://fe2.update.microsoft.com/v11/3/win7sp1/windowsupdate/selfupdate/wuident.cab with a web browser, it should download wuident.cab
