Hi everyone!

This forum was recommended to me by a friend as I'm having trouble with my Windows updates on my Acer notebook (Win 8.1, 64 Bit): It started with the monthly security update KB4507448, then KB4512488 and now KB4521864. They were downloaded and installed, but then I was told the update doesn't finish and changes are reversed. This happened every time, no matter what I try... (For example manual download from the Microsoft Update Catalog, following the Microsoft Support recommendations, FixWindowsUpdate or Reset Windows Update Agent.)

It seems, this is only happening with KB-Updates: Other updates (Net-Framework for example) are not affected and finish when installed seperatly. I also tried Windows own troubleshooting: It notices that updates couldn't be installed, but can't fix this... There are no USB-devices connected, I disabled the virus scanner for the moment and optimised the RAM, but nothing did solve the problem...

I also tried the System File Checker with sfc/scannow: It found damaged files, but couldn't fix them. Further infos were put into a CBS.log-file: For my troublesome updates it says:

CBS Read out cached applicability from TiLight for package: KB4507448-MappingPackage~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~9600.19401.1.9, ApplicableState: 0, CurrentState:0

CBS Read out cached applicability from TiLight for package: KB4512488-MappingPackage~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~9600.19431.1.5, ApplicableState: 0, CurrentState:0

My friend then showed me this thread on the forum which looks a lot like my problem:
[SOLVED] - Update doesn't finish, changes are being reversed (Win8.1)
I tried to add the recommended packages, but got the error "invalid INF-file was commited as parameter" every time... (There's nothing for me to choose from, too...) I stayed away from the actions recommended to the thread-starter only.

Thanks for your help! :-)

Hello! Thank you for your reply!

I tried the SFCFix: It took some time, but didn't seem to have found corruptions... Here is the logfile:

I retried, but changes were reversed again... However, the new updates KB2990967 and KB3063843 were sucessful!
KB4516115, KB45200005 and KB4524104 failed...

Here is the new CBS: CBS.zip

I can't find a C:\Windows\setupapi.dev.log, just setupact.log and setuperr.log under C:\Windows...

It says:
"The device can't be started. (Code 10)
Component of the object path was no directory object."

(I actually don't use any BT devices...)

Well, demo effect: I tried KB4516115 again by installing it from the update manager - it was downloaded and I was told afterwards that it succeed without restarting. The same for KB4521864 and KB4524104 (all seperatly). KB4520005 however went on restarting and I got the message again that changes are being reserved.

The status of KB4520005 in the update history said it just needed a restart, so I restarted again manually. After that the status was "failed", but the update s not in my list of important updates anymore (at least in the moment). Let me try it again tomorrow or I'll try some optional or older updates which failed in the beginning, so we get another "original failure"...

Please do the following:

GSmartControl
Follow the instructions below to check your SMART status with GSmartControl:

  • Download the portable version of GSmartControl and save it on your Desktop;
  • Extract the zip file to your Desktop. Open the folder gsmartcontrol-1.1.3-win64 which should be located on your Desktop and double-click gsmartcontrol.exe to launch the program.
  • Identify your drive in the list (if recognized by the tool), and hover your mouse over it.
  • You should see something called: SMART status. It will either read: Enabled, in which case you should do the following:
  • Double-click on it to bring up its window (usually you'll find your drive by its size or its brand name);
  • Go to the Self-Tests tab, then select Extended Self-test in the Test type drop-down list and click on Execute (this test can take a few hours to complete);
  • Once the test is over, the results will be displayed at the bottom of the window. Please copy and paste these results in your next reply or take a screenshot;
  • Also, go in the Attributes tab and if you have any entries highlighted in red or pink, take a screenshot of the GSmartControl window and attach it in your next reply;
  • Please note: If the SMART Status reads: Unsupported, stop and let me know.
