I have Windows 8.1 x64 and noticed recently that Copy-Paste is not working reliably. When I searched online for solutions, I found the possible explanation of corrupt system files so followed the instructions to run SFC as Admin. Indeed, I found three corrupt files on my system but SFC was unable to repair them. I then tried running SFCFix (by niemiro) found on eightforums. Another SFC scan revealed the corrupted files were not able to be repaired. I still have the Copy-Paste problem.

The names of the three corrupt files are: utc.app.json, telemetry.ASM-WindowsDefault.json, and Amd64\CNBJ2530.DPB. Note, I have an Intel processor.

Now I must make a confession and this is totally embarrassing - I realized I had run the Windows7 version of SFCFix by accident! My system is still seems to be working normally, but I feel that was a very dangerous thing I did. Drat! So having realized my mistake, I downloaded the Windows8 version of SFCFix and ran it. Unfortunately, SFC scan still shows the files are corrupt - in other words it was unable to repair them.

Here is the SFCFix.txt from the first run - when I stupidly ran the Windows7 version:
SFCFix version 2.4.5.0 by niemiro.

When I tried to attach a zip of my CBS folder but it would not upload because it exceeded the allowable file size. I had to remove several of the older CbsPersist files in order to reduce the size of the zipped folder, but all of those were dated prior to the events discussed above. The file "CBS 07 15 16 08" is one I created myself by renaming CBS after the scan following the first run of SFCFix (the mistaken Window7 run) - I did this because I wasn't sure if it would be overwritten later. The file "CBS" was created by the scan following the second run of SFCFix (the Windows8 version).

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. We'll fix the following corruption.

Code:

However, the other two that reference telemetry are a known issue and can safely be ignored. They don't impact the function of your machine. More info is below.

This update contains the following two manifests that are occasionally updated by the Diagnostic Tracking Service:

telemetry.ASM-WindowsDefault.json
utc.app.json

The two files are marked as static files in the update. When an advanced user runs the System File Checker Tool (sfc.exe), the files are unintentionally flagged as corrupted. There is no impact or corruption on a device that is running this update, and this issue will be fixed in a later service update.

Please do the following to correct the one corruption.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

Step#2 - Verify Corruption is fixed
1. Right-click on the Start
w8start.png
button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
sfc /scannow

3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter.
copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"

4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Please upload CBS.txt to this thread

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Items for your next post

Brian,

Thank you! It appears I have successfully repaired the one corrupt file. I am still having the issue with Cut and Paste, so there must be a different cause for that. I'll have to investigate further. Here is the text created by SFCFix, and the CBS.txt is attached. Thanks again.
