[SOLVED] Unable to use restore points

Windows updates ran today, and the machine did not restart, just hanging. Eventually I had to turn it off. Windows said updates had been installed successfully, but for prudence, I decided to restore the system and to run updates again.

After using System Restore, my computer restarted and I received a message:

System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed.

Details:
System Restore failed to extract the original copy of the directory from the restore point.

Source: %SystemRoot%\registration
Destination: ComPlusStaging

The restore point was damaged or was deleted during the restore.

You can try System Restore again and choose a different restore point. If you continue to see this error, you can try an advanced recovery method.

I then tried an earlier restore point, and got the same message. I then created another restore point, tried to restore to that one, and got the same message.

SFC /scannow shows no errors, but I want to know that I can use system restore if necessary. Can you help?

Hello,

I have experienced this a few times. I'd use the Recovery Options or repair disc and go through the Advanced troubleshooting options and tried each one and too cumbersome procedure but it's worth trying. It's also advisable to have image backups of your hard drive. For me, this works best and saves me a lot of headaches. Hope this helps.

Please post an update.

Sorry, but that is a little obscure for me. I've only just acquired this PC and don't have a repair disc or image backup (I had another problem that was resolved by another of your moderators). I went to the Recovery Options link you provided but couldn't see where to go from there. I'm hoping you can be a little more specific, and I'm happy to follow your suggestions, thanks.

I've deleted all previous restore points and then I created a new one. Then, by way of a test, I tried restoring to that one but got the same message. Clearly I don't want to restore my system to a previously corrupted state, but it seems there is a current issue, as restoring to a current point fails. I'm at a loss as to how to find the source of the corruption though, and any detailed help with that would be appreciated.

Uninstall webroot completely (and install/enable ms essentials from MS official website), then re-try to delete all restore points, create a new one and see if you can restore it.

(Have you got MS windows 7 installation CD or MS windows 7 recovery/repair CD? I think you can download the windows 7 ISO from MS, if it's not an OEM version, and you can create a recovery/repair CD directly from windows control panel)

Thanks, but no joy there. Is this the sort of issue that is likely to be eventually solved in a Windows Update?

Is there anything else you can suggest I should do? Sorry to be a pain, but I'm no expert so I would appreciate step by step detail.

I've solved the problem myself by doing a Windows repair. System restore now works. I've also saved system image and created a repair disk.
