Hi Everyone,

I've been trying to update from Windows 10 21H2 to Windows 11 but to no avail (tried ISO, Windows Update, Installation Assistant). Have tried resetting PC via Recovery>Reset this PC but that has failed too.

CHKDSK - no issues
SFC - "Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service."
DISM - "Error 193 An error occurred while attempting..."

Hope someone here can help me out.

Thank you in advance :)

Hi I'm Gary R,

I'm a Security Analyst, and a Windows Update Trainee, and I'd like to help you with your problems.

As a trainee there may be times when my instructions must first be checked by a qualified update expert, before I post them. This will by necessity introduce some delay when/if that occurs, so please be patient.

I am looking over your logs now, and will be back as soon as I've finished analysing them.

Please do the following for me ....

  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
  • Please copy this file to your desktop.
  • Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
  • Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
  • The file will likely be too large to upload here, if so please upload to a file sharing service.
  • Examples of services to upload to are WeTransfer and TransferKit and SendFileOnline

Please post me the link to the file

Thanks. Few things to look over, back ASAP.

WARNING! The following fix is specific to the user's system in this thread only. No one else should follow these instructions, as it could damage your system.

  • Download the attachment SFCFix.zip and save it on your desktop.
  • Save any work you have open, and close all programs.
  • Drag the SFCFix.zip file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it.

  • SFCFix will launch, let it complete (this could take a while).
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt
  • Open the file, then copy and paste its content in your next reply.

Next ...

  • Click Search button and type Command Prompt
  • From the results, right click on the Command Prompt icon, and select Run as administrator
  • A Command Window will open.
  • Copy paste the command below into it, then press Enter
  • Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  • Once DISM has finished running ...

If DISM completes successfully, please try to update again.

If unsuccessful, please post your latest CBS.log

DISM ran 100% but source files cannot be found.

Tried to update but it kept crashing, so attaching both logs here.

Looking over your latest logfiles now.

Going to be out for much of the day, so earliest I'm likely to get back to you is sometime this afternoon.

You're welcome.

Glad to hear you were able to update.

I'll mark this topic as solved.
