This is an ongoing issue.

Haven't been able to run a monthly since at least 3/2019

Install does not fail, just sits at a full progress bar indefinitely saying installing.
I watch the TrustedIntaller service run for about 10 minutes (as would be expected) but then stops consuming CPU but the installation never completes.

Ran through sfc /scannow - no errors
Ran through Windows Update Readiness Hotfix which did find missing items in winsxs. (surlog)
Missing items have been replaced from a known working machine.
Readiness check comes clean now.

Retried install, same issue.

Rebooting the machine while the install is going makes me get stuck at installing 1 out of 1 updates and a hard shutdown is required to get back to the machine.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated!

Hi! Please start with the following:

  • Download the portable version of GSmartControl and save it on your Desktop;
  • Extract the zip file to your Desktop. Open the folder gsmartcontrol-1.1.3-win64 which should be located on your Desktop and double-click gsmartcontrol.exe to launch the program.
  • Identify your drive in the list (if recognized by the tool), and hover your mouse over it.
  • You should see something called: SMART status. It will either read: Enabled, in which case you should do the following:
  • Double-click on it to bring up its window (usually you'll find your drive by its size or its brand name);
  • Go to the Self-Tests tab, then select Extended Self-test in the Test type drop-down list and click on Execute (this test can take a few hours to complete);
  • Once the test is over, the results will be displayed at the bottom of the window. Please copy and paste these results in your next reply or take a screenshot;
  • Also, go in the Attributes tab and if you have any entries highlighted in red or pink, take a screenshot of the GSmartControl window and attach it in your next reply;
  • Please note: If the SMART Status reads: Unsupported, stop and let me know.

Sorry for the delay.

The Exec had the machine with him and I just got it back.

Unfortunately, as I expected, your HDD is failing and needs to be replaced. You can do a clean install of your OS and apps after replacing the drive as the current image has been corrupt.

Understood.

What do you think about capturing an image of the machine and deploying to a new HDD?

Would it be feasible to proceed in troubleshooting this issue? (assuming the image successfully captures and deploys)

This particular machine would be very labor intensive to rebuild from scratch and from the user standpoint, is functioning normally aside from the update failures.

In any case, I will be replacing the HDD.

Thank you for your help.

I would highly recommend against doing that as this would only cause you even more issues and an unreliable system that would take a very long time to fix.

But under the circumstances, you may try to do this and see how it goes. :-)

Thank you for the advise.

I'm weighing my options.

The machine will be imaged for data retention anyways.

I plan to deploy the image to a fresh HDD
I'll run the same utility to check for hardware issues.
I'll run a chkdisk for good measure on the new drive.
Assuming all looks good, I'll run the update again and see how it goes.

Would you still be willing to troubleshoot the update issues if I continue to have problems?

Also we floated the idea of doing an in place upgrade to Win10 before I knew about the hardward issues.
We may still consider that to get to a newer OS anyway which presumably should not have the update issues.
Any thoughts on that as a plan of attack?

As an FYI:

After the image was deployed onto a new HDD, the machine booted normally.
GSmartControl was all clean.
Chkdisk ran normally with no issues.

Attempted update which once again "failed" as described in my original post.

I'm doing an in place upgrade to Windows 10 at this time.

Follow up.

In place upgrade to Windows 10 succeeded and updates in the new OS work normally.

This issue is resolved.
