Hi, everyone, from West Virginia!

Your site is one of the few that might lend me hope for my issues. I have been trying to download W10, at least 5 times at this point, but it was unsuccessful. I have run a number of repairs, but nothing showed up until I did the sfc/scanner and it came back that I had corrupted files in the CBS log, to the tune of at least 87. I want to attempt a fix but I'm unsure of what route to go. I have a windows 7 home edition, 64 bit and everything else seems fine. I was hit up with ransom ware back in November 2014, but did a recovery and have been receiving updates with no problems from Microsoft. Despite that, I kept getting notification that I didn't have genuine Windows and they were forcing me to buy. I couldn't get anywhere with what they were suggesting for troubleshooting, and since this computer came with W& pre-installed, I didn't have discs to reboot the W7 operating system. So here I am, thoroughly confused, frustrated and ready to shoot my computer. Even downloading W10 on a media tool didn't help! It only got so far then, BOOM! "W10 failed to download." No explanation given. Can anyone help?

Thankies in advance!

How did you resolve the non-Genuine Windows issue after the ransom ware?

Validate your Windows 7 installation. Go to the Windows validation site.

www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate

You must have Genuine Windows to upgrade to Windows 10.

Was validation successful?

....I was hit up with ransom ware back in November 2014, but did a recovery .....

How did you do a recovery without recovery DVDs? Did you use the HDD Recovery partition?

If needed, are you prepared to perform another Windows Recovery (reset to factory default settings) in order to have the best shot to get Windows 10 installed?

I did the sfc/scanner and it came back that I had corrupted files in the CBS log, to the tune of at least 87. I want to attempt a fix but I'm unsure of what route to go.

Follow these instructions in order to get help to fix the SFC corruptions - https://www.sysnative.com/forums/windows-update/4736-windows-update-forum-posting-instructions.html

.... but please be sure to perform the validation check and answer my questions. Thank you.

Thank you for replying. Yes, I tried validating but it came back that I had to buy Windows 7 all over again. The page also offered trouble shooting, but I have been doing this since February of this year, and haven't gotten anywhere with Microsoft. I even copied and pasted the results of the resolution tool that they wanted me to download(LegitCheck and MGAdiag) and sent to them, with no response. Yes, since I was never given Windows 7 discs with my HP Slimline, I had to do a recovery from the partition. If necessary, I will do a factory reset, but only if this is the last resort. I have no idea whether the corrupted CBS logs would affect the W10 download from my media tool, which I created, using a flash drive instead of rewriteable DVDs. I have been receiving updates all this time from Microsoft, with no backlash, so I have no idea why I'm having problems now, in trying to update the operating system. Thanks for your help.

Hi. . .

The inability to validate Windows 7 is the reason that you can't upgrade to Windows 10. Only "Genuine Windows" can be upgraded.

You don't need to pay hundreds of dollars for a new Windows 7 installation DVD as you already own a copy of Windows 7.

My advice to you is to back up your documents, pictures, videos, etc... all personal files and reinstall Windows 7; allow Windows Updates to install (be patient - there are literally hundreds of them); then upgrade to Windows 10.

If Windows 7 came preinstalled on your system, there should be a hard drive recovery partition. If you don't have a recovery partition, it got damaged by the infection or you never created the recovery DVDs on your own when the system was new, you can purchase Windows 7 recovery media from your system manufacturer - usually at a reasonable price.

If you purchased Windows 7 at a store or downloaded it after purchasing it, you can contact Microsoft to obtain a new full retail Windows 7 DVD.

Here is a list of system manufacturers as well as information to contact Microsoft - https://www.sysnative.com/forums/wi...rosoft-windows-replacement-media-os-dvds.html
