Hello,

I am unable to install any new drivers (e.g. while adding any new hardware device or installing OpenVPN) or install Windows updates due to the error: "Error 1009: The configuration registry database is corrupt." reported in C:\Windows\INF\setupapi.dev.log

Configuration: Windows 10 Ver 1803 (64-bit)

I've attached the log files and the results of the SFC and DISM utilities as well as "C:\Windows\INF\setupapi.dev.log" that contains errors 1009 and 0x000003F1 while trying to install OpenVPN. The same errors occur while trying to add a new hardware device.

Based on the link: [SOLVED] - Server 2019 - Can't do updates - Error: 1009 The configuration registry database is corrupt I've also attached my "DRIVERS" file present in C:\Windows\System32\config

Can someone please help me to solve this issue.

Regards,
Dhiren.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative,

Replace Drivers Hive Manually

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
  1. Download DRIVERS.ZIP and save to your desktop.
  2. Right-click on it and select Extract all.... Make sure the "Show extracted files when complete" is checked and click Extract.
  3. Now we have the DRIVERS file that we will be using to replace your current one.
  4. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\config
  5. Right-click on the current DRIVERS file and select rename. Rename it to DRIVERS.bad.
Note: If you get an error that the file is in use, reboot your computer and then try again.
  6. Take the file from the Drivers folder on your desktop and paste it into C:\Windows\System32\config

Afterwards reboot the system and attempt to update. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS logs and the Setupapi.dev.log.

Hello,

Thanks a lot for your help. I'll try to replace the DRIVERS file as soon as possible and let you know the result.

Hello,

With the updated DRIVERS file, I'm able to install OpenVPN as well as add new hardware devices. Thanks a lot for your help.

Hi,

You're welcome. Glad to hear the problem has been resolved, But I would also suggest to update your current version of Windows. Build 1803 is no longer supported and reached the EOL date on 12-11-2019.

Hello,

Yes, I'll update Windows 10 soon as this issue was also preventing Windows updates from being installed. Thanks.

Regards,
Dhiren.

Great, let me know if the upgrade was successful or not. Sometimes after repairing the DRIVERS hive an upgrade is still failing because a corrupted driver.
