Background - on this host we have not been able to install the Monthly Update Rollup since August. Now two other 2008R2 hosts are behaving the same way as well as a Win7x64 host.

When the Monthly Quality Rollup is installed, it typically finishes in the Windows Update UI, but following the required reboot it stops at 15% during the pre-boot portion, and then reverts the changes.

Steps completed so far for this 2008R2 server host -

  • sfc /scannow via Administrator command prompt window
    • No errors found
  • SURT/DISM Scan
    • No errors detected
  • Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth via Administrator Powershell window
    • No errors detected
  • Ran SFCFix
    • No issues found and nothing to fix

CBS folder zip is linked here.

All help is greatly appreciated.

Hello -

Yes, we do need assistance. We still have one 2008R2 host that is failing a Windows Monthly Quality Rollup, now it is KB4467107.

No sir - Hyper-V is not enabled as a role.

This host is used as a GC DC, DFS host, DNS and NPS.

Thanks! Please provide the following so I can gather more info:

Step#1 - FRST Scan

1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Right click to run as administrator. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
3. Please ensure you place a check mark in the Addition.txt check box at the bottom of the form before running (if not already).
4. Press Scan button.
5. It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should now be the desktop)
6. Please attach the log back here.
7. Another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST64.exe) will be generated Please also attach that along with the FRST.txt in your reply.

In case this is helpful - I did try to use DISM to install KB4467107 and KB4338818.

DISM log file attached.

Thank you, I see the issue:

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to a file sharing service and just provide the link here.
