Hi,

I have Windows Server 2008R2 SP1 as File Server and I'm trying to replace it with WinSrv2019 using Windows Admin Center's Storage Migration Service. How ever, Storage Migration Service fails detecting anything on source server with an error "Element not found" in "State" field.

I've tried everything I can to resolve this but with no luck. I've managed to install all the updates from Windows Update except KB4467107 which just fails again and again - also if I try to install it manually from Update Catalog. I've also tried to install WMF 5.1 KB3191566 if that would help but that too fails with an error "prerequisites have not been met" in PowerShell window. Latest service pack is installed. WMF 3.0 is not installed. .NET Framework 4.5.2 and 4.8 are installed - so I don't know what's wrong.

So what I'm trying to achive is to get Storage Migration Service working, but I have no idea why it says "Element not found" and why these updates wont install. Another File Server running same OS is working just fine with Storage Migration Service.

sfc /scannow - Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

System Update Readiness tool - Installed

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth - Not supported on this OS

CBS logs - CBS.zip

Hello and welcome!

Step#1 - Capture Process Monitor Trace
1. Download and run Process Monitor. Leave this running while you perform the next steps.
2. Try enabling the service just like you have in the past.
3. Stop Process Monitor as soon as it fails. You can simply do this by clicking the magnifying glass on the toolbar as shown below.

4. Select the File menu...Save... and save the file to your desktop. This is likely the default location. The name (unless changed) will be LogFile.PML. This is fine.
5. Zip up and provide the link to the LogFile.PML file as well as your CBS.log Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or OneDrive or SendSpace.

Hi!

Thanks for the help this far!

Herer are the logs: StorageMigrationService-Admin_ed54f8fc-46f1-4d33-8c90-290cdd362523.evtx

I also attached Storage Migration Service log from orchestrator computer. According to Google results, similar errors might occur if not all Important updates are installed so I just might need to find a solution to install KB4467107 which is failing.

Storage Migration Service log suggests that it can't connect the source computer but Process Monitor does give successful TCP Send and Recive logs for ip 10.200.6.10.

For Process Monitor no, because I don't know what I'm looking for. I started caputre just before I started Storage Migration Service and stopped it when it failed.

Storaga Migration Service
Start time: 4/21/2020, 12:01:15 PM
End time: 4/21/2020, 12:01:20 PM

Storage Migration Service is something you run on Orchestrator computer, so the process itself doesn't run as is on this problematic server. Orchestrator computer in this case is the one with ip 10.200.6.10 and it does come up in Process Monitor log.

Also for CBS log I didn't do any filtering.

Storage Migration Service log was cleared before I initiated inventory scan today.

CBS.log is over 4GB. Any idea how to make this smaller? Can't rename it to make it generate new one and Notepad or Notepad++ can not open it as it is too big.

Hi!

FRST Registry Search
1. Click your Start button and type in cmd.
2.After you find the Command Prompt, right click on it and select Run as Administrator.
3. Copy and paste the following into the Command Prompt:

reg load HKLM\COMPONENTS C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\COMPONENTS

4. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
5. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
6. Copy and paste KB4457144 into the Search box and click the Search Registry button.
7. When the scan is complete a notepad window will open with the results. Please attach this to your next reply. It is saved on your desktop named SearchReg.txt.

Thanks.

Step#1 - FRST Fix
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Download the attached fixlist.txt and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
3. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
4. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
5. When finished FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply.
6. Reboot and retry updates.

Thank you! This helped and I was able to run updates in. Still no luck with Storage Migration Service as it's still reporting "element not found" but atleast something is working now. :)
Here's the fixlog: Fixlog -deducted.txt
