Dear Admin,
I have a Gateway ZX6971 all-in-one home computer that is running Windows 7 Home Premium. It is currently failing to install 4 Important updates and 3 Optional updates. The update history also shows that it failed to install an Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems two years ago and failed to Upgrade to Windows 10 Home in August 2015.
This is my Mom’s computer and even though I am largely a novice, I have been trying to fix it for her. Installing these basic updates with Windows Update has failed more than a dozen times in the last few days.
We began by running a defragger (Defraggler) and CClearner on the computer. This computer also has an issue shutting down or flashing colors; it may be that it has trouble returning from the screen saver, but sometimes it shuts down when in the middle of something and the screen saver isn’t up. Because of this, I began looking to reinstall the video drivers but then I realized the updated that have not installed.
I tried at least 4 times to use Windows Update to Install updates and then shutting down the computer where the flag for “Installs updates and then shuts down your computer” could be seen. Even after 4 times these updates continued to fail to install.
I then looked toward the internet for possible solutions. Finding a script, I tried to Reset Windows Update components manually; 13 of the 36 failed. I can send you the list of what I typed into the command prompt and the error code or each that failed. I have also typed out a list from the Windows Update History and I can send you each failed install and how many times they have failed.
It was while compiling that list that I learned that Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3080079) failed back in August of 2017. I also saw that and Upgrade to Windows 10 Home was attempted in 2015 but ultimately failed. My thought then, was that perhaps the 2017 KB3080079 install failure was causing problems for the newer updates to install. I attempted to get it to install, but it would not.
So I searched the internet for a solution to that specific problem and thus found your wonderful forum. I read through that thread but it was for a server and not a home computer so I did not attempt to use their specific solution (I have also now read what a bad idea that would have been because you provide such wonderful individual solutions, but I didn’t know that yet). Following your guide, I ran SFC Scan, SURT/DISM Scan, SFCFix, and have a compressed CBS Properties logfile folder (which is 56 MB so it can be found here: CBS.zip ).
I hope I did everything properly. The SFC Scan through command prompt resulted in “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.”
I had a bit more trouble finding the correct thing to do for the SURT/DISM Scan and accidently ran the Windows Update Troubleshooter a couple of times before I saw the right thing and installed the Hotfix for Windows (KB947821) which is listed at the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems. The install was successful but the install of those 4 Important Updates still failed.
The SFCFix found 1 SURT corruptions and was unable to fix it.
After I wrote all of this I realized I wasn’t sure if I restarted the computer after the Hotfix was installed.
So I restarted the computer but the needed updates still fail to install.
Thank you for your time and attention and this awesome forum and for even the possibility that you might be able to solve these issues. Thank You!
