Windows7 Home Premium laptop with new hard drive installed. Used Asus recovery discs and installed Windows7 SP1 Home on it. The machine has taken over 160 Windows updates with out an issue. However KB3042058 fails to install. I have tried the system readiness tool, SFC (which found no issues) and various out MS fixit tools without any effect. I even went as far as uninstalling MS Security Essentials. I have tried downloading the update as a stand alone file. Hopefully someone can help me.

I would get either code 80246007 or 80070490. I have tried deleting the Software Distribution folder with no effect.

Will be uploading CBS directory separately.

Hi frustrated :)

My name is Aura and I'll be assisting you with your issue.

SURT total detected corruption count: 964

This isn't good. So basically, you did a Factory Reset on your ASUS laptop using the Recovery Discs that came with it?

Yes I did. However since I had everything backed up due to replacing the hard drive I redid the install all over again using the same recovery discs and was able to install 220+ updates without any issues.

Alright, then let's see what these SURT errors are all about :) Follow the instructions below please.

System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) - Scan
Follow the instructions below to run a scan with the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) and provide a log;
  • Download the right version of SURT for your system;
    • Your version of Windows is:
  • Once downloaded, execute the installer, and go throught the installation (this process can take around 15-20 minutes);
  • On completion, a log will be created in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log;
  • Attach this log in your next reply;
Alternatively, if these instructions are unclear for you, you can follow the tutorial below.

System Update Readiness Tool (SURT)

I had already run SURT 2 days ago and had uploaded the CBS folder separately. I have attached this file anyways.

I also ran SURT yesterday BEFORE I wiped the drive and reinstalled Windows7 correctly. At that time SURT ran for over 2 hrs without finishing. That is why I took measures into my own hands and did a clean install of Windows a second time. As the second install oif Windows7 Home fixed the problem please close this thread.
