Unable to fix file corruption causing update to fail on win 8.1 after running SFCFix.exe. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

After first running sfc and dism I ended up with 67 un-repaired errors Found this site and ran SFCFix which finished with :CBS & SFC total detected corruption count: 40

Not sure of what Caused problem to begin with My guess was malware as File permissions have been very messed
up also and I'm sure have added to this issue things were getting unbearably slow so started trying updates with no success.
Then Ran both malwarebytes and Hitman-pro all has been clean as far as that goes but because what I thought had may have
been issues related to permissions on my user account I decided to log into built in ADMIN account And ran all the scans from
here but still am left with these 40 files corrupted and so as not to make it worse figured id try here.

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.


  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to a file sharing service. Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or OneDrive or SendSpace and then just provide the link in your reply.
 
SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.


  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

To tell you the truth I was just going through the motions and following your instructions and not wanting to
Run any other scans or try updates untill you were finished so didn't really look . I had seen that permissions
had been changed back and less files were corrupted so Should I just reboot and see if Im able to run update
and or do i need to manually start or stop any services like the update service because originally thats how i noticed the
update issues . After update should i log into my user account and run the updates or would it be better to log into
this admin account and run it from there?
 
Please log into your usual admin account you use every day and attempt Checking for Updates from there. If updates are found, please install them and if any fail, attach CBS.log.
 
So Yea still having issues with update as the update service refuses to start regardless of what I do
and or what order was able to find the update log file and Got this bellow. The corruption issue helped drastically
as far as performance in that i can at least get around without every thing crawling . perhaps you have some incite
as to how to remedy the bellow errors I'm still working on it also but if your able to give me some clues id appreciate it

I did realize that was a different log I i thought since all the scans were coming up ok

that perhaps that log was capturing something that the CBS wasn't

After you made me realize the scan passed I rebooted and tried to run update but it did the same thing its been doing for somewhere
like a year or so in that it says unable to start update the service is not running. So then went and checked Services and was still disabled as
it has been And when set to automatic and trying to start will not start and keeps going straight back to disabled had thought about
trying to drop down into safe mode to start it but thought i remembered that it wouldn't run in safe mode. but did try setting it to auto start
in safe mode again with no luck.
 
Please do the following:

Restart Windows in Safe Mode w/networking.

Download Windows Repair (All-in-One) Portable


  • Extract the tweaking.com_windows_repair_aio.zip to c:\Windows\TEMP the zip will extract to a folder called Tweaking.com - Windows Repair
  • Execute the file Repair_Windows.exe from the Tweaking.com - Windows Repair folder, accept the Security warning and the EULA
  • Click the button Jump To Repairs
  • Click the Open Repairs button to access the following screen:

  • Click the box All Repairs to uncheck all the boxes
  • Check only the following boxes:
    • 16 - Repair Windows Updates
  • Check the box Restart/Shutdown System When Finished > Restart System
  • Click the Start Repairs button
  • When the system reboots, attempt the update again.
 
that's actually funny you should ask for that. I have that and just was going to do that last night so was reading
up on the things that it can do as it seems like some powerful software. so yeas Will do.
 
so definitely forward progress after running win_update_AIO and reboot tried running update got the same error
then decided to see if when i checked for updates it would work it actually did and because it populated so quickly
and because I have been trying both the view installed updates and check for updates with nothing until l this time
unfortunately as i am typing this i went back just to check and it hung and still is. ive attached both logs from the repair software.
