Hello,

I found in necessary to reinstall my operating system, Windows 7 Service Pack 1 64 bit Professional and Microsoft Office 2013.

I have been trying to download updates all day. I have been trying one at a time. They message box says windows in installing the update but it never loads.

I have turned off both the firewall (Private Firewall) and the antivirus (Bit Defender Free) with the same result.

The SFCFix log is below.

The CBS zip file is attached.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Please do the following.

Step#1 - Clean Boot
1. Boot your computer into a Clean Boot state following the instructions at the link below.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929135

Step#2 - System Update Readiness Tool (SUR)
1. Download and run the following file.
2. When it asks you if you wish to install, please answer yes. Note: It could take 15 minutes or more to run. Please don't cancel.
3. You will get an Installation Complete screen when it's done running.
4. Please attach the log from the following location. C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Thanks. When you go to Windows Updates do you see a whole bunch of updates that show that they need to install or just a few?

Hi BrianDrab,

Windows Update shows 158 "important" updates and 63 "optional" updates.

Hi BrianDrab,

Security Updates for .NetFramework 3.51 KB 2840632, KB 2861698, KB 2894844 and 19 others

Security Updates for .NetFramework 4.51 KB 2777083, KB 2742613, KB 2840642 and 13 others

Security Updates for Windows 7 x 64 KB 2479943, KB3491683, KB 2506212 and 75 to 100 others.

As I said, I had to reinstall the operating system and Microsoft Office 2013. It's my (very limited) understanding that since upgrades are integrated into the operating system you can't save them.
I did not have a system back up.

Thanks. Please manually download KB2506212 and save to your desktop. Try to install this update from the downloaded file. Let me know the results. This will give me a direction.

Hi BrianDrab,

KB2506212 has been running for 10 minutes since I downloaded it. All it is doing is sitting on my screen saying that it is searching for updates this computer.

One really weird thing is that I have been able to download some of the updates. 2 on 11/24, 3 on 11/25, 3 on 11/28, 1 on 11/30, 4 on 12/1, 2 on 12/2 and 2 today.
Basically, I try to download one and just do other things on the computer. Most of the time I give up after 20 minutes. I never really notice when they install.
I looked at the list of downloads today and was surprised that two actually made it today. However, I still have 150 + important updates and the 60 + recommended updates to review.

As I have been typing this KB2506212 is still running. I never turned off my firewall or antivirus for Windows downloads because there was never a problem. I'll turn off both at the same time to see if that helps.

Could it be some type of permissions problem or wouldn't there be a op-up screen saying I need more or different permissions as occasionally happens. I am logged in as administrator.

I'll get back probably in the AM to let you know how turning off the antivirus and firewall goes.

Hi BrianDrab,

I turned off both the firewall and the antivirus using autoruns unchecking anything to do with BitDefender and Private Firewall. I was unable to turn off gzserv.exe which is part of Bitdefender. I was able to install KB2506212 from my desktop very quickly. I restarted the computer and turned off the antivirus and firewall again using the same procedure and tried to download an update through Microsoft Updates. No joy. Probably making things more confusing than less. Sorry.

Please do the following.

Step#1 - Run Windows Repairs
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
1. Download Windows Repair (All-in-One) Portable to your desktop.
2. Once the file is downloaded, right-click on the file on your desktop and choose Extract All...

3. Keep the defaults and click the Extract button.
4. A folder named tweaking.com_windows_repair_aio will be extracted to the desktop. Once the extraction is complete the folder will open.
5. Inside this folder, there is a folder named Tweaking.com - Windows Repair. Open this folder as well.

6. Double-click on Repair_Windows.exe to open. Note: Please make sure all of your programs are closed and anything you were working on is saved as we will be rebooting.
7. When the program opens, click the Reboot to Safe Mode button at the bottom of the screen. Answer Yes to allow.
8. Once rebooted into Safe Mode, open the program again. When the program opens, click the Repairs tab and click the Open Repairs button.
9. A backup of your registry will be made. After a few moments you will have many options from which you can choose.
10. Please click the Unselect All button and then click to enable only the following ones:

05 - Repair WMI
06 - Repair Windows Firewall
14 - Remove Temp Files
15 - Repair Proxy Settings
17 - Repair Windows Updates

11. Ensure the Restart check box is selected and click the Start Repairs button in the lower right of the screen. This may take some time to run so be patient.

12. Once the fixes are complete you will be prompted to restart your machine. Answer Yes.

Hi BrainDrab,

I ran windows Repair All in One as you asked. I can find no difference.

Friday early evening I selected and downloaded KB2894854 (10.9MB), KB2737083(10.0 MB), and KB 3097989 (948 kb) . The download started at 6:29 PM. The installation was completed at 7:01PM. (28 minutes)

This morning I selected and downloaded KB2861208 (13.1 MB), KB2742613 (12.9 MB) and KB2840642 (12.6 MB). I started the process at 11:16 AM. The process completed at 12:04PM.
(48 minutes)

I hadn't noticed before but I received a pop-up from my firewall just at the end of the installation. I should have written the message down. I will next time.

Perhaps I have a firewall problem or perhaps Comcast (my ISP) is chocking down my bandwidth for commercial use elsewhere. I say that do to the difference in size of the downloads. Friday's being 21 MB and today's being 38.6 MB.

Are their any tests etc. that I can run to determine if it is a firewall problem or a bandwidth problem or both ? I did use the same firewall before the re installation of the operating system and never experienced downloads and installations of anywhere near this length.

Thanks

Yes there are tests you can run. But it's not clear to me whether it's taking a long time to download or taking a long time to install. Can you confirm?

Hi BrianDrab,

It takes that long to download. When I select updates to download and the download begins. I "look in on" the procedure trying to establish some rhyme or reason. I have been lucky enough twice to check the status at the time the updates were installing. Both times the installation speeds were what I would consider normal, so I don't believe that is the issue.

Hope that helps.

oldraider47

Yes that does help.

Internet Speed Check
Would you mind doing this speed test and let me know what is reported?

1. Go to http://www.speedtest.net
2. Wait until the BEGIN TEST button appears and click on it.

3. When it's finished please let me know the Ping, Download Speed and Upload Speed
Results.JPG

Hi BrianDrab,

The ping was 22 ms. The download speed was 179.77 Mbps and the Upload Speed was 12.28 Mbps.

Hope that helps

Hi BrianDrab,

I use Internet Explorer version 11.0.9600.18124. I've been slowly downloading the backlog of updates I had. It seems that once I got through the updates for.NET the updates have downloaded much faster. I'm almost through with the important updates. Then I'll be able to start the recommended updates. Perhaps the downloads are smaller ?

Thanks

Hi BrianDrab,

Thanks for the help.

Windows update seems to have settled down for the moment.

Have a nice holiday season
