I recently put together this computer and installed a fresh windows 8.1 copy.
CPU: intel i5 2500k
MOBO: Asrock Z77 Pro 3
SSD: Kingston 240gb
GPU: GTX 760
RAM: HyperX 24gb

I've been trying to get windows updates so I can upgrade to windows 10.

Internet works but can't connect to windows update servers and sometimes google mail and facebook don't load and have to be refreshed a few times.

Seems like a connection issue with windows update servers and google servers.

It always fails to connect while checking for updates, but this morning there was a pop up saying to install updates. I clicked okay and a bunch of them installed and my computer restarted. Now I have these updates installed but I still can't check for new updates.

The main update I want is the upgrade to windows 10 one.

Does anyone have any idea what I could do?

Hello and welcome

Due to the precise nature of your corruption, you will receive help from a user named CKing123. He's one of our senior trainees here who's in his final phrase of his studies and needs to gain some real world experience in specific areas of Windows Update. This means that he'll be assisting you, but that I will first need to double check and approve his fixes before he posts them to you. If anything this is a good thing for you because it means that you've got at least two of us watching over your thread, but it will unfortunately add a slight delay between each reply. I hope that you understand and can accept the need for us to train up new members in this way in order to carry on doing what we do here, however, if for any reason you object to this setup, I will happily take on your thread myself.

Thank you very much for your understanding. We'll be with you very shortly.

Hello temcowookie and :welcome: to Sysnative!

Lets upgrade your computer directly to Windows 10. This should fix all of your issues.

Go to this page and click Upgrade Now

This will download MediaCreationTool

Launch MediaCreationTool, and click Upgrade Now
Follow the on-screen instructions

Note: If it asks you about keeping your files and programs, choose to keep everything

Let us know if you were able to successfully upgrade to Windows 10 or not.

Thanks I wasn't aware of this tool. Will this upgrade windows 8.1 to windows 10 and keep the full license intact? Downloading right now.

Successfully updated to windows 10. Thank you.

It's still not able to check for updates. Error code: 0x8024401c

edit: Pretty much the only thing I need now is .NET framework installed but it also won't connect to that.

Hello!

We need more information about your system using Speccy:

Download and open Speccy (This is a portable version because the installer bundles unwanted programs)
You will see a spinning circle at the bottom. Wait for it to finish and disappear
Go to File > Publish Snapshot
A warning will appear of publishing the snapshot, click Yes
Now, a window will come, and click on Copy to Clipboard and paste it into your next reply.

Hello!

Looking at your Speccy report, another issue I found is that you have Windows Defender enabled, but you also have Avast! disabled. If you want to use Windows Defender as an antivirus, a good idea will be to uninstall Avast (you will also have to download the cleanup from Avast to completely remove the antivirus). If you want to use Avast! Antivirus, then disable Windows Defender and turn on Avast!

After fixing the RAM sticks and keeping one of the two antiviruses, can you now use Windows Update properly?

Thanks, I didn't know defender was enabled.. I disabled avast thinking it might be blocking it.
With both of them disabled it still can't check for updates.

Hello!

We will do a Clean Boot so that there is no other interference:

Press Windows + R
Copy and Paste this and press enter:
Code:
msconfig

In the General tab, choose Selective startup
Make sure Load startup items is clear (no checkmark)

Go to Services tab
Checkmark Hide all Microsoft services
Click Disable all

Click Apply

If there is a dialog box asking you to restart, allow it to. Otherwise, restart your computer manually.

After the restart, check to see if the updates get installed

Let me know how it goes

Hello, sorry for the long delay, it's been pretty busy here. I appreciate everything you guys do here to help people.

I followed your steps to disable startup services and programs then tried updating again.

I get this error:

"There were some problems installing updates, but we'll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help: (0x8024401c)"

edit:

also one strange thing with this computer is that it has a very hard time connecting to facebook.com.

The only problems it has is connecting to windows update, downloading .net framework, and connecting to facebook.com.

Error for .net says
"Windows couldn't find required files to complete the requested changes. Make sure you're connected to Internet, and try again.

Hello temcowookie

Insert your Windows 8.1 installation disc
Press Windows + X
Click on Command Prompt (Admin)
If UAC warning comes, click Yes

In command prompt, copy and paste this and change the [Letter] to the letter of the install DVD/CD:
Code:
Dism /online /enable-feature /featurename:NetFx3 /All /Source:[Letter]:\sources\sxs /LimitAccess

Let us know what happens after you run this command. Do you get any errors afterwards?
