Hello,
on my wife's computer I am unable to install latest updates. This started some years ago when some update was installed either incorrectly or from the middle of update list. I then tried to apply various updates from the list of 15 remaining to minimize the number of failed updates with no luck. According to the log I am pasting below the system seems healthy. As the CBS logs are around 350 MB in size (14 MB compressed) I am providing a link to download them:
CBS.zip

The operating system is Windows 8.1 German.
The log from SFCFix is as follows:
SFCFix version 3.0.2.1 by niemiro.
Start time: 2020-11-14 18:21:23.628
Microsoft Windows 8.1 Update 3 - amd64

Hi Welcome to Sysnative :)

Try to follow the guide on this link and write a new BCD and Bootloader.

Hello,

I tried the bcdbot command with no difference in behaviour. I then rebooted and searched for updates and let the system apply all 10 found important updates. After another reboot it showed one update initially but when I clicked the link to search for updates, it searched for approx. 5 minutes and then showed again 10 updates to install. It was normal in my earlier attempts that the system seemed to apply those updates, showing initially nothing or just one update, but upon manual click on Search for updates it found those updates again.

Hi,

DISM scan
  • Please open up a Command Prompt Window as a Administrator, instructions for Windows 8.x.
  • Inside the command prompt window type or Copy & Paste the following command:
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Note: This may take some time to finish. Let me know if the process reaches 100% or not and any error reported
  • Locate the log c:\Windows\logs\cbs\CBS.log copy the file to the Desktop, Zip it and attach to your post.
Note: If the file is too big to attach please upload it to a service like Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive or upload to SendSpace and just provide the link for the file here.

Hi,

I have just run DISM with the following message printed (first in German, then translated into English for you):
Der Wiederherstellungsvorgang wurde abgeschlossen. Die Beschädigung des Komponentenspeichers wurde repariert.
Der Vorgang wurde erfolgreich beendet.

The restore process has completed. The component store corruption has been repaired.
The process was completed successfully.

The cbs.log is attached.

Hi,

Thanks. Now try to install the updates.

If it fails please report the KB number affected.

Hi,

here is the Windows Update report generated by one of my automation scripts which can list installed software, Windows Update history and more. You can see date/time of installation, the update name (in German) and then OK if successful or an error code:

Hi,
I am unable to install this update. The error code displayed is 0x8007000D.

No problem. Repeat the install using the downloaded file and after failing collect the CBS.log for me please.

Hi,
I redownloaded the update on the target computer and this time it could process with installation, it took about an hour, then two reboots and when I then checked the update installation status, it showed error 0x800F0922. The cbs.log is attached.

Hi,

Please access the computer BIOS/UEFI locate the option related with Secure Boot and disable it.

With Secure Boot off try to install the update again.

Hi,
it is already off, the computer is in the legacy BIOS mode (I won't switch it to UEFI as it would mean a lot of problems when it is an older system).

In that case my instructions to write a new BCD on post #2 are not valid so you couldn't apply them!

Please follow this guide How to Restore MBR on Windows 10/8.1/8/7 and execute the instruction from
Part 3. How to Restore MBR in Windows 10/8.1/8/7 - 1. Restore MBR in Windows 8/8.1/10 via Command Prompt

The result of the commands must be equivalent to what you see on the image, let me know if not.

Well, i could do this, but I am afraid I will destroy the boot loader that is present on the hard drive. This is a boot loader of the backup utility that allows blind and visually impaired users recover their working OS when in trouble regardless of how it was damaged, whether virus or anything else. It can be invoked upon computer startup by pressing a special key on the keyboard when it then overwrites the operating system with its safe image. Users are allowed to create their own safe backups when they think the system is in a good shape, too. The computer boots normally every time even when restarting between updates, not intervening with the boot loader which, when no special key is pressed, passes control to Windows. I could, however, try the other parameters like /scanos and /rebuildbcd.

Thanks for clarifying, the non-standard boot loader is most likely the reason for the update to fail!

You can try only to write a new BCD to see if that is enough for the update to install sucessfully.

Code:
bcdedit /export C:\bcdbackup

cd /d c:\boot
attrib bcd –s –h –r
ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.backup
bootrec /rebuildbcd

The commands above will do a backup of the BCD before creating a new one.
