Trying to understand why driver will install on one PC but not the other

Hi,

I have two PC's
- One is a Dell M6700 notebook
- The other is a Gigabyte custom PC

I have a 'USB to ATA/ATAPI bridge' however

I think that 'Windows encountered at problem installing the driver software for your device', however, Windows annoyingly will not tell me what that problem is.

I think that this is a fairly generic device, and on the Dell this works and on the Gigabyte no joy.

I have a stack of work related disks that need archiving, and I cant use a notebook to do this.

I'd like to know how to investigate the issue, and to resolve it.

I have tried:-
1. Copying the entire Windows/system32 drivers folder from the Dell to the Gygabyte

I think windows must be finding the driver, and then having a problem installing. .... But what is that problem and does windows log this, or have a mechanism to tell me?

Kind regards,
John

Are you positive the 2nd computer requires that driver?

In April 2015 I was offered an Intel driver on our four Windows 7 computers. The problem is two of the computers have an AMD chip. Why was an Intel driver offered to them? Sometimes MS makes mistakes on the drivers it offers.

If everything is working on the 2nd computer, hide the driver. In fact, most drivers offered by Windows update to me I have hidden. I've been doing this since Windows 2000 when a MS driver broke my internet connection. Rolling back the driver or restoring an image (not sure what method I used because it was so long ago), brought back my internet connection. Figuring I made the mistake, I installed the driver a 2nd time and again lost internet access.

Hi, thanks for reply.

To be honest, Windows machines just make me want to curl up and give up. I prefered the simplicity of the the old Atari ST back in the day, lol.

1. There are two drivers that won't install, even though Windows finds one and then rejects it with an error.

One is most definitely for a new hard drive caddy in which I want to hot-swap hard drives for repairs and cloning.

2. Ive run SFCFix, and its exported a much smaller file, in which reports corrupt files: And I am wondering if there is some type of conflict going on?

3. I have checked Device Manager many times including the 'hidden devices' under Device Manager/View/Show hidden devices.

However, no extra missing devices were found.

4. By device is installed, I am guessing that you mean that the hardware is plugged in and supplied with power where appropriate? It is.

5. I tried right clicking in Properties, and did not notice the "Device Status" box before. ... I had been looking on the 'details' tab, and searching through the 'property' tabs for info: No doubt wasting a lot of time.

The device status for 'Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller' is "This device is not configured correctly. (Code 1)
"
a. Using online option, their is a "problem installing" which is what is infuriating me! ... No error code given.
b. The "Unknown Device" ... This gives Code 43 ... Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems.
- However, on the General Tab, its location is reported as 'Port_#0001.Hub_#0008'

I've tried restarting in safe-mode, and also with device signing turned off.

To be honest, if there is no problem, then I might just hide them. However, I really need to install some hard drives, and clone/archive from them. I am also finding issues with plugging the hard drives directly into the SATA internally. I did have a hard drive fault with bad sectors on a drive on there, so there is a slim possibility of a piece of hardware dying on the GygaByte motherboard, but I somehow doubt it?

Hi,

Driver install errors should hopefully be logged to C:\Windows\Inf\setupapi.dev.log

Can you please run MGADiag for me? Please download the MGADiag tool and run it. When it opens, press continue and wait. When the screen changes, press copy. Post the results in your next post.

Also since SFCFix has repaired some corruption, do a fresh SFC scan (sfc /scannow) and then run SFCFix again.

You do understand that drivers are "hardware" drivers - meaning they are hardware specific. You are trying to install a Honda alternator (and a bunch of other Honda parts) into a Toyota. Yes, in the case of the alternator, they do the exact same thing, and support many of the exact same devices, but that does not mean they are interchangeable.

I have a stack of work related disks that need archiving, and I cant use a notebook to do this.
Then I recommend a docking station.
