The SFCfix, as found here on the forum, was also run and yielded the attached output.

Please let me know what to do next.
Many thanks :)

Hello and many thanks,

(Was trying to separate issues, since removal of KB2598845 makes this thread's errors disappear.)

Yes, it is from the same computer, when KB2598845 is installed (as windows update suggested).

Thank you very much indeed!
:)

PS: The cbs.log has no reference to "avast" at all, hence only what was found in the CheckSUR.log was posted.

PPS: The KB2598845 / iecompat.dll errors seem gone, tested twice via sfc check, directly after reinstall of KB2598845 as well as after a reboot following the aforementioned reinstall, in both cases:
"Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

Is Avast still installed on this machine and if so, which version ?

Start the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) again.
On completion, attach the logfile C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log in your next reply.

Yes, Avast is still installed on this machine; the version is: "19.3.2369 - build 19.3.4241.439".
Attached please find the logfile C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log.
Thank you.

Provide the COMPONENTS hive.

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again. Note: If you find that you need to reboot and are unable to because this is a server then try Option#2 below.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to SendSpace and just provide the link here.

Option#2 (only if you are unable to follow the previous instructions)

  • Please download the Freeware RegBak from here: Acelogix Software - Download products
You will find it at the bottom of the page that the link brings you to.
  • Go ahead and install this program and accept all the defaults. After the last install screen the program should open.
  • Click the New Backup button. Accept the defaults and simply click Start.
  • When it says Finished successfully, click the Close button.
  • This will bring you back to the main screen of the program. You will see one entry in this list with the date that you did it. Right-click on this line-item and select Explore Backup...
  • This will bring you into the folder where the backup was made. You should see a Users folder and a Windows folder along with a couple other files. Double-click on the Windows folder to open it. Then open the System32 folder and then config folder. You should see around 6 files in here, one of which is named COMPONENTS.
  • Copy the COMPONENTS file to your Desktop. If the COMPONENTS file does not exist, please fetch it instead from C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.
  • Now right-click on the COMPONENTS file that is on your desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Then please upload the zip file (COMPONENTS.zip) to your favourite file sharing website (it will be too big to upload here). Examples of services to upload to are Filedropper or One Drive or SendSpace and then just provide the link in your reply.
  • You can close any open windows you have as well as the RegBak program now.

As I am not sure about all the info within the "COMPONENTS" file, except that it seems to have lots of specifics about the machine and the software on it, it seems like a privacy breach to disclose it.

I would much prefer to fix it myself if only the steps were explained - would that be possible?

Thank you.

The COMPONENTS hive contains system information only, no private information.
The SOFTWARE hive is a different file and does contain private information. If the SOFTWARE is needed in a fix, we always ask to post it in a private message.
If you like you may provide the COMPONENTS hive in a private message.

Meanwhile I have
# uninstalled avast, then
# deleted all files and folders re the above mentioned errors, then
# reinstalled avast, with the effect that 4/6 SURT-error folders with all their SURT-error files are back as they were before the uninstall, which suggests they belong to the current avast.

May I please much prefer to fix it myself if only the steps were explained - would that be possible?

Thank you.

Yes, I know. That's why I asked for the COMPONENTS hive.

Sorry but that is explained only in the Windows Update training here at Sysnative.com

I have send you a PM about the WU training. If you first like to do that we are 6-12 months further so I don't think that is an optiion for a quick fix.
Secondly, as a helper you will need to have a look at components hives from other computers too.
