Hello everybody,

I have a situation with the latest Windows Update KB3024777 released in January 2015 on a computer running Windows 7 Ultimate.

The issue is that the 'so-called' problem update (KB3004394 issued in December 2014) is not installed on the computer in question.
(This was discovered by checking the list of installed updates, and checking the C: Drive)
KB3024777 will not install, and cannot be deleted, as the delete option is greyed out; it gives an 'Error Code 1'. :shame2:
Every time the machine is shutdown, it goes through the motions of "installing" this pesky update, but alas to no avail.
Microsoft Support do not seem to know how to rectify this issue either.

Does anyone have any clues as to how to overcome the irksome issue. :banghead:
If you need further info please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind Regards,

Hello my old friend

We can start of here just by checking the integrity of all the system files and WU files, this might not be able to help with the actually issue at hand, but it is always a good a idea to check these things before exploring deeper.

Now I am sure you will know how to do this without all the steps, but this is just my standard responses (After all, you were the one that taught me the importance of using canned speeches all those years ago!).

SFC /SCANNOW

  1. Click on the
    Win7Orb_zps4dae3b32.jpg
button. Inside the search box type in CMD
  2. Right click on CMD => Choose Run as Administrator
  3. Inside the Command Prompt windows copy and paste the following command SFC /SCANNOW
  4. Please wait for this to Finish before continuing with the rest of the steps.

Please follow the instructions Here to run the System Update Readiness Tool. When the SURT finishes installing, please continue with the rest of the steps.

Export CBS folder

  1. Click the Start button
    StartButton_16x16.gif
    then click Computer.
  2. Double-click on the C: drive, under the Hard Disk Drives category, and then scroll down to, and double click on the Windows folder.
  3. Find and double click on the Logs folder.
  4. Right-click on the CBS folder, and select Copy.
  5. Go back to your Desktop, right-click on it, and select Paste. You should now see a copy of the CBS folder appear on your Desktop called CBS.
  6. Right-click on this new folder, and navigate through Send to, and select Compressed (zipped) folder.
  7. A new file, also called CBS (CBS.zip), but this time with a different icon, will be created.
  8. Attach this to your next post please.
Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to you next post please upload via Dropbox or One Drive

Please navigate to C:\Windows\winsxs and copy any files with a similar name to pending.xml (e.g. pending.xml, pending.xml.bad, pending.xml_dfsadf78 etc.) to your folder on the Desktop [there may not be any, just if there are]. Then zip up this folder and attach it to your next post.

Hi Alex,

I apologise for not mentioning it earlier, but I ran sfc /scannow after delving into the C: Drive; the result - nothing!
Furthermore there is no CBS Folder to see on the C: Drive.
Personally, I don't think that running SURT will be of any benefit, because this unit is only 9 months old, and it has a Windows® rating of 5.8, and had Windows 7 Ultimate originally installed by LG. (It is an all-in-one machine, that has a large monitor screen with a DVD player and motherboard integrated in the one unit).
Microsoft in Sydney don't seem to know why this issue is occurring.
Any further suggestions? :noidea:

Kind Regards,

Hi Dave,

The CBS folder should be inside C:\Windows\LOGS\m even if SFC did not detected any issues, can I please see this folder? It should give some indications on any pending restarts?

As for SURT, you may be right. But if one update failed to install, there could possibly be some include/corrupt WU (.cat/.mum/.manifest) files.

Where you about to find any of the pending files?

We will first try the 'safe' method of clearing out any pending transactions.

Can you boot into the recovery environment, and launch command prompt please: How to use the Windows 7 System Recovery Environment Command Prompt

When command prompt is launched, type in the following command and press enter:

DISM /image:C:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions

Hi Dave,

As the DISM command had no affect we have to check if there are any pending transactions found in other places before we start to remove anything.

  1. Click on the
    Win7Orb_zps4dae3b32.jpg
button. Inside the search box type in CMD
  2. Right click on CMD => Choose Run as Administrator
  3. Inside the Command Prompt windows copy and paste the following command
    REG LOAD HKLM\COMPONENTS C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS
    REG QUERY HKLM\COMPONENTS >1&& notepad 1

  4. Please wait for this to Finish before continuing with rest of the steps.
Please also export the following registry keys, add them into a zip and attach to this post:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update\RebootRequired

Depending on how these results go will depending on what needs to be action next :)
