Trouble updating Windows 8 - keeps undoing!

I've had no luck with upgrades on my Win 8 Asus PC for months! I've searched thoroughly for a solution to no avail.

Currently have over 45 critical updates that will go through the install process, but when I reboot, it gets to about 15% installed and then undoes everything. I've been able to update a few things manually (typically Outlook and app updates) but for the most part, the updates won't work! The PC seems to be working okay (I edit HD video on it regularly with no real problems), but I'm concerned it will all come to a screeching halt at some point.

I've uploaded my CBS file as suggested (at least I think so??). I really could use some guidance as I make my living using this machine.

I could REALLY use some help so I can sleep better at night!

thanks,
Guy

Hello Guy, welcome to Sysnative!

I can't see the logs, so can you do this to upload them to me please:

DISM /RestoreHealth Scan

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Right-click on the Start
    w8start.png
button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
  2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. [sfcfixdownload]Download SFCFix[/sfcfixdownload] (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the attached file, SFCFix.txt, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.txt - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.txt.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a log should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

Tom:

Okay, loaded and ran DISM, no problem. Downloaded SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.txt and drag the .txt file over the .exe file as directed.
It asked for some ID info and after entering that, it then produced the following on the .txt file

Code:
SFCFix version 2.2.1.0 by niemiro.
Start time: 2014-04-23 15:31:35.134
Using .txt script file at C:\Users\Guy's\Desktop\SFCFix.txt

Collect:: directive completed successfully.

Successfully processed all directives.
SFCFix version 2.2.1.0 by niemiro has completed.
Currently storing 0 datablocks.
Finish time: 2014-04-23 15:32:26.804
----------------------EOF-----------------------

Appears to have verified the running of the directives, and I assume the rest means something to you. I did the process twice as I expected a long list of info, but perhaps this is all you need??

Thank you much for your assistance in any case.

If I need to still get the CBS.zip file to you, let me know. I can send it via Hightail or other process. For some reason the "attach file" function doesn't seem to work off either Chrome or Explorer for me.

regards,
Guy

Hi,

SFCFix ran perfectly and uploaded your logs for you to a private area where we can see and download them. Tom will look at them as soon as he can

Tom - they've gone into the test thread again if you can't find them! :p
Richard, please fix this!

Thank Stephen, I was wondering where they'd gone. It was the last poster in the threadlist that got me!

Guy, your CBS log shows a very odd problem:

Windows appears to be having difficulties loading the Schema hive and unfortunately I have absolutely no idea how to fix this. The logs aren't showing any cause, just that there's a problem, and it's in a very unusual place for these sort of problems to occur. I hate to say it, but I think your best bet from this point is to do a refresh:

How to refresh, reset or restore your PC - Microsoft Windows Help

Follow the instructions in: Refreshing your PC without affecting your files

Thank Stephen, I was wondering where they'd gone. It was the last poster in the threadlist that got me!

You're welcome! I've been fooled by that too - it seems to be a bug with vB rather than SFCFix.

Seems that all submissions using the BBCode are going into that thread though so I've stuck it to make it easy to find until Richard fixes it.
